이선재는 보스턴 출신의 재미교포 색소폰 연주자로 현재 서울에 거주하고 있다.
그는 자연 의학의 공부를 했지만 어린 시절부터 Rivers Music School과
New England Conservatory에서 시작하여 Rochester에 있는 Eastman School of Music에서 화학 학위를 취득하면서 재즈 색소폰을 연주했다.
포틀랜드에서 자연 의학 학위를 받기 위해 공부하면서 그는 Kin Trio를 이끌며 포틀랜드 재즈 페스티벌에서 공연하였으며 PJCE 레코드에서 앨범 "Breath"도 발표하였다. 2014년에 한국으로 이주한 후, 2016년 제8회 자라섬국제재즈콩쿨에서 대상과 Best Creativity 상을 받았다.
그는 사회적 소재를 활용한 자작곡들과 참신한 연주로 콩쿨 당시에도 큰 관심을 받았으며, 현재는 이태원 클럽 등을 중심으로 활동중이며, 이선재 트리오와 TrioGo 두 팀을 이끌고 있다.
이번 자라섬 공연에서는 그의 트리오 멤버인 드러머 송준영과 베이시스트 조민기, 그리고 스페셜 게스트 비브라폰 연주자 크리스 바가가 함께 한다.
Sunjae Lee is a saxophonist, a Korean American from Boston, living in Seoul. Lee studied in medical school, but he started music at the Rivers Music School and New England Conservatory, earned an undergraduate degree from Eastman School of Music, playing the jazz saxophone. Continuously studied for a medical degree, Lee was leading Kin Trio performing at Portland Jazz Festival, released an album <Breath> on PJCE record. Moved to Korea in 2014, he was awarded as Grand Prize and Best Creativity from the 8th Jarasum International Jazz Concurs in 2016. His use of social items for his music and unique play were gained much attention at the concurs. Currently, he actively performs his music at jazz clubs around Leetaewon area, leading two teams, Sunjae Lee Trio and TrioGo. This year in Jarasum, his trio members drummer Junyoung Song, bassist Minki Cho, and vibraphone player Chris Varga will be performing together.
