말이 필요 없는 두 디바의 만남, 박성연 그리고 말로
‘디바스: 박성연 그리고 말로’ 프로젝트는 한국 재즈계의 대모, 한국 재즈 1세대 여성 보컬리스트인 박성연과 현 시대의 재즈보컬로서 가장 활발한 활동과 영향력을 지니며 활동 중인 말로가 함께 하는 공연으로 이번 자라섬 공연을 위해 특별히 기획되었다.
박성연은 1978년 데뷔하여 최근까지 재즈 보컬리스트로 현역에서 활동하며, 우리나라 재즈 여성 가수의 명맥을 유지해 온 유일한 가수이다. 또, 1970년대 올댓재즈와 더불어 유일한 국내 재즈클럽인 야누스를 오픈하여, 35년 이상 운영해 온 국내 재즈클럽과 재즈씬의 산 증인이기도 하다. 이러한 공로를 인정받아 박성연은 2012년 대한민국 대중문화예술상 대통령상, 2014년에는 한국대중음악상 공로상을 수상하였다.
지금까지 총 세장의 앨범 <박성연과 Jazz at Janus>(1983), <Other Side of Park Sung Yeon>(1998), <Park Sung Yeon With Strings>(2013)을 발매하였으며, 2016년에는 재즈클럽 야누스를 기억하고 사랑하는 <야누스, 그 기억의 현재> 라는 앨범 프로젝트에 임인건 외 재즈 1세대 연주자인 김수열, 이동기, 최선배 등과 함께 참여하기도 하였다.
말로는 힘과 섬세함을 함께 갖춘 재즈보컬로, ‘스캣의 여왕’, ‘한국의 엘라 피츠제럴드’란 별명을 지니며 현 재즈씬에서 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있다. 노래 뿐 아니라 작곡, 편곡, 프로듀싱까지 함께 해 내는 멀티 뮤지션으로, 특히 3집<벚꽃 지다>와 4집<지금 너에게로> 음반은 재즈 음반으로선 드물게 전곡이 순도 높은 한국어 가사로, ‘한국적 재즈의 새 지평을 열었다’라는 절찬을 받기도 하였다.
지금까지 총 6장의 리더작을 발표하였으며, 우리의 전통 멜로디가 어떻게 재즈로 변용되어 현대성을 얻을 수 있는 지를 보여준 프로젝트 앨범<K-STANDARDS 동백 아가씨>와 <Malo sings Baeho>를 통해 한국적 재즈 스탠다드의 가능성을 확인시켜주었다. 또, 말로는 박성연 선생의 클럽 야누스를 최근 재즈클럽 에반스와 함께 인수하여 운영중에 있다.
한국 재즈 역사의 산 증인 박성연과 한국적 재즈의 새 지평을 열며 끊임없이 탐색하고 수렴해가는 말로, 이 두 디바의 뜻 깊은 만남을 올해 자라섬에서 만나보자.

Project ‘Divas: Park Sung Yeon and Malo’ is specially organized for this year at Jarasum stage, with Park Sung Yeon, who is the founding mother of Korean jazz scene and the first female vocalist and Malo, performing the most active at this contemporary Korea jazz scene. Since her debut in 1978, Park has been active jazz vocalist working and continued only female jazz vocalist in Korean jazz scene. Also, in the 1970s, she opened a jazz club Janus, operated over 35 years, became a living witness of Korean jazz clubs and scene. For her contribution, she was awarded as Pop Culture Art Award by the President in 2012 and Korean Pop Music Contribution Award in 2014. Thus far, total 3 albums, <Park Seong Yeon and Jazz at Janus(1983)>. <Other Side of Park Sung Yeon(1998)>, and <Park Sung Yeon With Strings(2013)> are released by her. In 2016, she participated in <Janus, the Present of Memory> with the first generation of jazz musicians such as Sooyeol Kim, Dongki Lee, and Seonbae Choi.
Malo is with power and sensitivity, praised as ‘queen of scat’ and ‘ Korean Ella Fitzgerald’ performing the current jazz scene. She is a multi-musicians not only singing but composing, rearranging and producing. Especially her third album <Cherryblossom Down> and the fourth album <Now To You> are composed with full Korean lyrics, praised as ‘opening new Korean jazz scene'. Until now, she released total 6 leading albums. Two of the albums were presenting how our traditional melody can gain contemporary feelings with jazz vibe <K-STANDARAD, Dongbaek Agassi> and <Malo Sings Baeho>.
Also, Malo took over Park Sung Yeon’s club Janus and club Evans and operating herself. Living witness of Korean jazz scene Park Sung Yeon and opening new Korean jazz scene Malo, let’s meet two divas this year in Jarasum.
