풍부한 상상력과 자유로운 표현력을 지닌 뉴질랜드 그룹, 더 자크
더 자크는 뉴질랜드 출신 색소포니스트 제이크 백슨데일과 기타리스트 캘럼 앨러디스가 결성한 옥텟(8인조)으로, 4명의 혼 섹션과 4명의 리듬 섹션이 파워풀한 연주를 선보인다. 뉴질랜드음악학교(MZSM)에서 만난 이들은 졸업 후 2013년 베를린으로 건너가 시드니 출신 피아니스트 루크 스위팅(Luke Sweeting)과 그룹 앤티포즈(Antipodes)를 결성하는 등 과감하고 진취적인 활동을 펼쳐왔다. 풍부한 상상력과 자유로운 표현력을 지닌 이들이 펼치는 무대는 뉴질랜드 재즈라는 새로운 매력을 만날 수 있는 자리가 될 것이다.
제이크 백슨데일은 2014년 데뷔 앨범 <Nerve>와 2015년 발표한 <The Green Hour>가 연달아 호평을 받으며 재즈계에 이름을 알리기 시작했다. 2016년에는 뉴질랜드의 젊은 작곡가들을 후원하기 위해 설립된 에드윈 카 장학금에 선정되어 뉴욕에서 데이브 더글라스(Dave Douglas), 미구엘 제논(Miguel Zenón) 등과 교류했다. 현재 더 자크 외에도 앤티포즈, JB3 트리오(JB3 Trio), 웰링턴 밍거스 앙상블(Wellington Mingus Ensemble) 등에서 활동하고 있다. 캘럼 앨러디스는 기타리스트이자 밴드 리더이기도 하지만 2016년 ‘Sons of Thunder’와 2017년 'Deep Thought'로 뉴질랜드 재즈 어워드에서 작곡상을 수상하며, 작곡가로도 실력을 인정받고 있다.

Since 2011 the 8-piece ensemble The Jac has been a leading voice in the New Zealand jazz scene, pushing a modern sound with their distinctive, through-composed compositions, tight ensemble playing and impressive live shows. Based in the diverse and creative capital of Wellington, the band, led by alto saxophonist and composer Jake Baxendale, features some of the country’s finest musical talent from jazz, classical and metal scenes.
The Jac released their debut album Nerve on the Rattle Jazz label in 2014, receiving considerable critical success. Nerve was nominated for the NZ Music Awards Best Jazz Album of the year. Their new album The Green Hour was released in 2015, expanding on their long-form compositional approach and consolidating their sound. The opening title “Sons of Thunder” won New Zealand’s inaugural Jazz Composition of the Year award.
In 2017 they performed 12 shows around the country as part of Chamber Music New Zealand’s “Encompass” tour, solidifying their cross-genre credentials. This was followed by a headlining concert with Korean traditional/jazz fusion group, Black String, at the Wellington Jazz Festival. The show sold out and met with rave reviews; more such collaborations are in the pipeline over coming months, starting with concerts in Korea in October.
The band features musicians bringing influences and expertise from outside the jazz spectrum. Notable among these are Matthew Allison, associate principal trombonist in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and Shaun Anderson, drummer for metal bands Saving Grace and Depths. Completing the line-up are Alexis French, trumpet; Nick Tipping, bass; Chris Buckland, tenor saxophone; Daniel Millward, piano; and Callum Allardice, guitarist, and alongside Jake the other chief composer for the band.
