피아니스트 파블로 헬트는 1986년 생으로 이제 막 서른을 넘긴 젊은 연주자다. 독일의 한 음악가 집안에서 태어나 4살부터 드럼 레슨을 받고 10살에 피아노를 시작했다. 18살에는 쾰른 음악원에 입학해 피아니스트 존 테일러(John Taylor)와 휴버트 누스(Hubert Nuss) 등을 사사했는데 파블로 헬트 역시 그들의 영향을 받아 서정적이고도 혁신적인 재즈의 계보를 이어가고 있다.
베이시스트 Robert Landfermann과 드러머 Jonas Burgwinkel은 10년 이상 호흡을 맞춘 트리오 멤버다. 그만큼 트리오는 그들의 음악적 정체성을 잘 드러낸다고 할 수 있는데 2013년 ECHO 라이징 스타, 2016년 SWR 재즈 상 등을 수상하며 실력을 인정받았다. 2007년 [Forest of Oblivion]을 시작으로 독일 피루엣 레코드에서 7장의 리더작을 발표했으며 트럼펫, 색소폰, 하프 등 10명의 연주자가 참여한 2010년 앨범 [Grow]가 호평을 받았다. 2014년에는 기타리스트 존 스코필드(John Scofield)와 함께 한 콘서트 실황을 [The Trio Meets John Scofield]로 선보였다. ‘Nocturne’으로 대표되는 파블로 헬트 트리오의 서정성은 유럽 재즈를 사랑하는 국내 팬들에게도 큰 지지를 얻을 것으로 보인다.

The Pablo Held Trio is one of the most lively and significant formations on the contemporary European jazz scene. In their concerts they transcend the boundaries between composition and improvisation by relinquishing the idea of a set list and premeditated arrangements. The risk of radical spontaneity enthuses them for some years now and it inspired an aesthetic model that is exceptional amongst contemporary musicians. ‚
When it comes to counting the Pablo Held Trio”s qualities, critics do not cut down on superlatives. There is talk of “the shooting star among young jazz pianists”, of “an ideal combination of improvisational imagination and musical economy” and of “one of the most exciting young groups of German jazz”. With good reason, for pianist Pablo Held, bassist Robert Landfermann and drummer Jonas Burgwinkel are more than a just a trio. They form one of the few symbiotic units in the piano trio”s more recent history. The trinity”s intentions flow together in one common stream, the course and density of which time and again is full of surprises.
The cohesion of the Pablo Held Trio is based on friendship and on the creative desire to constantly enter unknown territories. The artistic impact and the autonomy of the three outstanding musicians are attracting a growing circle of congenial musicians from Europe and America who often join the trio. The collaboration with the Munich-based label Pirouet Records is of utmost importance for the group”s evolvement and is documented in eight CDs so far.
