이스라엘이 낳은 위대한 베이시스트
아비샤이 코헨은 뛰어난 베이스 연주자이자, 훌륭한 보컬리스트이며, 작곡은 물론 밴드 리더로서 실력을 인정받고 있는, 명실공히 세계적인 아티스트이다. 그는 현재 오랜 동료였던 칙 코리아(Chick Corea)를 비롯해, 허비 핸콕(Herbie Hancock), 로이 하그로브(Roy Hargrove), 마크 줄리아나(Mark Guiliana) 등 최고의 음악가들과 함께하고 있다. 어린 시절 피아노를 먼저 접했으나 베이스 연주자인 자코 파스토리우스(Jaco Pastorius)에게서 영감을 받아 일렉트릭 베이스에 빠졌다가 결국 콘트라베이스로 넘어오게 됐다. 이스라엘의 키부츠라는 작은 마을에서 태어나 음악을 공부하고자 뉴욕으로 건너가 길거리 연주부터 시작했던 그는, 재즈를 비롯하여 다양한 음악을 거부감 없이 받아들였고, 그 결과 라틴 음악부터 재즈 퓨전까지 많은 스타일의 음악을 섭렵하게 됐다. 여기에 크레즈머, 라디노 등 유대인들의 전통 음악이 더해져 아비샤이 코헨은 자신만의 매력적이고 독특한 스타일을 완성했다.
아비샤이 코헨이 콘트라베이스를 연주하는 모습은 굉장히 역동적이다. 손가락과 활을 이용해 베이스의 현을 뜯고 긋는 동시에 악기의 몸통을 두드려 리듬을 연주하기도 한다. 쉴 새 없이 몸을 움직이며 악기의 모든 부분을 자유자재로 활용하는 그의 모습에는 관객들로 하여금 음악에 빠져들게 만드는 힘이 담겨 있다.
이번 자라섬 무대에서 아비샤이 코헨은 같은 이스라엘 연주자인 Omri Mor, Noam David와 함께 트리오를 구성하여 공연을 선보일 예정이다. 이스라엘 내에서 뛰어난 연주자로 인정받고 있는 이들은, 자국의 음악 씬에 대한 애정과 자부심이 강한 아비샤이 코헨이 자신있게 추천하는 연주자들이다. 담백한 구성이지만, 곳곳에서 표출하는 화려한 연주와 다양한 리듬으로, 아비샤이 코헨은 자라섬을 찾은 관객들에게 황홀함을 선사할 것이다.

The energy Avishai put into bringing the bass under the spotlight has pushed the boundaries of jazz and earned him international awards and recognition globally. He has continuously performed at the most renowned venues and festivals worldwide and it has enabled him to develop a strong network of followers and listeners, striking a chord with the audience wherever he has performed. The stage is undoubtedly a place where Avishai feels at home, so much so that attending one of his live performances is probably the best way to get acquainted with his musical universe. DownBeat magazine noted Avishai as a “jazz visionary of global proportions” while Bass Player magazine declared him as one of the 100 most influential bass players of the twentieth century.
Over the last two decades the bassist, singer, composer and band leader Avishai Cohen, has earned his reputation as one of the world's greatest bassists. It is, however, as a composer that his musical statement has grown. Now with his Trio, he brings fresh compositions and arrangements to the stage, as well as performing many audience favorites from his past recordings.
Accompanying him on stage is one of the most diverse, versatile and fresh voices to emerge from the current jazz scene, pianist and composer, Omri Mor. His musical spectrum spans from Classical and Jazz, through to Arab - Andalusian, Algerian Chaabi and Latin music.
Avishai is also joined by the creative and distinctive Noam David, a drummer whose rich style and complex polyrhythmic sounds have contributed greatly to the ever-growing music scene in Israel.
