현(弦) 위를 흐르는 아름다운 음악, 길라드 에프랏 앙상블
자라섬국제재즈페스티벌에서는 해마다 한 나라를 선정하고 음악을 소개하는 ‘포커스’ 무대를 마련한다. 올해는 유대 음악의 전통 위에 실력과 개성을 쌓아올린 이스라엘이다. 건국 이전인 1936년 창단된 이스라엘 필하모닉 오케스트라는 세계적인 반열에 올랐고 바이올리니스트 이자크 펄만(Itzhak Perlman), 핀커스 주커만(Pinchas Zukerman) 등이 이스라엘 출신 명연주자로 활동하고 있다. 이스라엘은 클래식뿐만 아니라 재즈에서도 독특한 개성으로 단연 돋보이는데, 단연 자라섬에서만 볼 수 있는 아티스트를 꼽으라면, 바로 길라드 에프랏이다. 그는 명문 예루살렘 음악원 출신으로 클래식, 재즈, 클레츠머 등 다양한 음악을 바탕으로 자신만의 음악 세계를 펼친다. 보컬리스트 야스민 레비(Yasmin Levy)를 비롯한 많은 이스라엘 연주자들과 협연했으며 벨기에 출신 싱어송라이터 라라 파비앙(Lara Fabian)의 월드 투어 멤버로 활동하기도 했다. 특히 스트링 트리오와 앙상블을 이끌며 현악기의 풍부한 잠재성을 보여주는 음악가로 평가받는다. 바이올린과 보컬, 첼로, 만돌린 등 현악기주자들과 함께 길라드 에프랏 앙상블을 결성해 활동하고 있으며 2015년 을 발표했다. 자라섬에서는 전통과 현대를 아우르는 현(弦)의 아름다움을 선사할 예정이다.

For the last fifteen years, Gilad played and researched music that is different from the music he grew up with (jazz and classical). At first, he was exposed to music that comes from the Latin world (Latin America and Africa), then the music which comes from the East and Asia (Turkish and Persian classical music) and in recent years to the music from the south of the United States (Blue Grass that actually combines between Irish and Scottish melodies from the 17th century and the folk-country music). And, to another kind of American music that comes from the Appalachian Mountains (where there is a relatively old tradition of playing the string instruments which is different from the usual European classical music).
Each of the many music styles mentioned, combined with sounds and landscapes of his childhood (which moves between US, Sweden and the Jezreel Valley in Israel) gave birth to the unique style of composition of the project. Gilad’s music is characterized by a unique style of composition that combines all different genres of music, which touched his life during the years of his musical activity (Classic, Jazz, World and Israeli music).
Gilad Ephrat who is also a composer and a double bass player is the visionary and creator of the ensemble. Through a new approach to string ensemble performance, the four musicians take their instruments (violin, mandolin, cello, and double bass) to the limits of their physical abilities, thereby unveiling the fascinating potential of strings. The unique dialogue among the instruments exchanging roles of melody and accompaniment gives birth to exciting ensemble playing, that sweeps the listener into a new world of captivating sounds.
