재즈 피아니스트 강현규는 2010년부터 2016년 2월까지 미국 보스톤에 위치한 Berklee College of Music 과 New England Conservatory 에서 음악을 공부했다. 한국으로 돌아온 뒤에는 유학 시절일상에서 느낀 감정들을 소재로 작곡한 곡들을 중심으로 앨범 작업에 돌입, 2016년 5월 강현규만의 감성이 담긴 첫 앨범 <인생은 아름다워(Life is Beautiful)>을 발매하였다. 그의 음반에는 슬픔과 외로움, 고마움 등 다양한 일상적인 감정들이 베여있으며, 특히 이 첫 앨범은 유학시절 대학원 마지막 학기에 익명의 누군가가 한 달에 $1000 이내의 금액들을 후원해주셨던 것에 대한 고마움과 의미 있는 일을 하기 위해 탄생된 것이라고 한다. 앨범 발매 이후, 보스턴 New England Conservatory 재학시절 함께 공부했던 드러머 박종선과 베이시스트 김도영, 그리고 2015년 라이징스타 선정된 이후 여러 음악씬에서 왕성한 활동을 하고 있는 색소포니스트 송하철을 멤버로 강현규 퀄텟을 결성하여 국내 유명 Jazz 클럽 등지에서 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있다. 또, 2016년에는 제13회 자라섬국제재즈페스티벌 오프밴드 아티스트로 선정, ‘찾아가는 자라섬’ 및 페스티벌 오프스테이지에서 공연을 하기도 하였다.
2017년 하반기에는 새롭게 씌여진 곡들을 녹음해 디지털 싱글 음원을 발표할 계획중이다. 이번 자라섬국제재즈페스티벌 재즈팔레트 무대에서는 기존의 앨범 곡들과 새롭게 씌여진 곡들로 무대를 꾸밀 예정이다. 피아니스트 강현규는 연주 음악은 가사가 있는 노래와 다르게 그 의미가 모호해 음악을 듣는 관객이나 연주자에게 상상하는 즐거움이 있다고 말한다. 그리고 이 상상들을 통해 일상의 고단함은 잠시 내려놓고 지난날의 좋은 추억과 앞으로의 좋은 일들을 생각하며 삶을 살아가는 동력을 얻었으면 좋겠다고 한다. 잠시 동안이지만 올해 자라섬에서 강현규 퀄텟의 음악을 들으며 이 상상하는 즐거움을 누려보는 것은 어떠할지.
Jazz pianist Hyungyu Kang studied music at the Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory in Boston from 2010 to February 2016. Since he came back to Korea he started to create his album about feelings while he was studying abroad. In May 2016, Kang’s first album with his unique soul <Life is Beautiful> was released. His music covers his sadness, loneness, thankfulness, and other everyday feelings. Especially, this first album was created to thank and do something worth for someone who sponsored him about $1,000 every month anonymously during his study. After release of his album, Kang gathered drummer Jongsun Park and bassist Doyong Kim, studied together at New England Conservatory in Boston, and saxophonist Hachul Song, performed actively in various music scene after selected as rising start 2015, to organize Hyungyu Kang’s Quartet. Kang’s Quartet actively performs at famous jazz clubs in Korea. Also, the quartet was chosen as an OFF-BAND artist at the 13th Jarasum International Jazz Festival, performed at ‘Jazz Breeze from Jarasum’ and the festival’s off-stage. For the second half of the year 2017, the quartet is planning to release a digital single album, recording the newly written music pieces.
For this year’s JIJF Jazz Palette stage, Hyungyu Kang’s Quartet will perform both music from the album and newly written music. Pianist Hyungyu Kang said that underline meaning of instrumental music, unlike music with lyrics, is often vague so the audience or player can have enjoyment of their imagination. Also, with these imagination, he wants the audience to gain energy to forget about everyday life’s tiredness and live with thinking about good things in the future. Even though it will be short time of period, take a chance to listen to Hyungyu Kang’s Quartet’s music and enjoy imagination in this year Jarasum.
