쿠바 재즈의 현재와 미래를 잇는 거장, 추초 발데스 & 곤잘로 루발카바
피아니스트 추초 발데스와 곤잘로 루발카바가 피아노 듀오로 자라섬을 찾는다. 아프로 쿠반의 정서 위에 클래식과 재즈를 더해 독자적인 음악세계를 구축해온 두 연주자가 함께 하는 매우 특별한 무대다.
쿠바에서 가장 영향력 있는 음악가 중 한 명인 추초 발데스는 1941년 아바나에서 태어났다. 아버지인 피아니스트 베보 발데스(Bebo Valdés)의 영향으로 어린 시절부터 클래식을 연주했고 1973년 쿠바 최고의 연주자들이 모인 그룹 이라케레(Irakere)를 결성했다. 1976년 디지 길레스피(Dizzy Gillespie)에게 발탁되어 세계무대에 이름을 알렸으나 쿠바에 남아 활동을 이어갔다. 그리고 이라케레의 첫 앨범 [Irakere]가 1979년 그래미상을 수상하면서 다시 한 번 자신의 이름과 쿠바 음악을 세계에 알렸다. 1996년에 이르러 본격적인 미국 활동을 시작했는데 한 밴드를 20년 이상 하면서 솔로와 쿼텟에 대한 갈망이 있었기 때문이라고 한다. 쌓였던 갈증을 해소하듯 왕성한 활동을 펼치며 지금까지 6차례 그래미상을 수상했다.
추초 발데스가 태어나고 22년 뒤, 아바나에서 작곡가 할아버지와 피아니스트 아버지의 음악적 재능을 물려받은 곤잘로 루발카바가 태어났다. 어린 시절부터 드럼과 피아노를 배운 것은 물론 그의 집에는 보컬리스트 오마라 포르투온도(Omara Portuondo), 피아니스트 프랭크 에밀리오 플린(Frank Emilio Flynn) 등 쿠바 최고의 연주자들이 오갔다. 1985년 그룹 그루포 프로젝트(Grupo Proyecto)를 결성해 활동하던 중 찰리 헤이든(Charlie Haden)의 눈에 띄어 그 자리에서 픽업되었다. 이후 찰리 헤이든의 전폭적인 지지로 세계무대에 이름을 알리며 90년대 재즈계의 젊은 거장으로 자리매김했다. 2002년 [Nocturne]과 2005년 [Land of the Sun]으로 그래미상을 수상했다.
이들은 2015년 쿠바를 대표하는 피아니스트 겸 작곡가 에르네스토 레쿠오나(Ernesto Lecuona)의 삶과 음악을 그린 다큐멘터리 [레쿠오나를 연주하며]에서 함께 했다. 영화에는 도미니카 공화국 출신 피아니스트 미셀 카밀로(Michel Camilo)가 함께 해 ‘라틴 아메리카’에 중점을 두었다면 지금은 두 연주자가 듀오를 이뤄 ‘쿠바’에 중점을 둔 활동을 이어가고 있다. 2017년에는 아바나에서 열린 국제 재즈의 날 무대에서 델로니어스 몽크(Thelonious Monk)의 ‘Blue Monk’를 연주해 찬사를 받기도 했다. 추초 발데스와 곤잘로 루발카바는 두 대의 피아노를 위한 신곡, 쿠바의 고전부터 대중음악 등을 담은 앨범 [Trance]로 듀오 활동을 이어갈 예정이다. 그야말로 빛이 나는 피아노 선율을 지닌 이들 듀오는 자라섬에서 만날 수 있는 최고의 선물이 될 것이다.

Winner of five Grammy and three Latin Grammy Awards, the Cuban pianist, composer and arranger Chucho Valdés is the most influential figure in modern Afro-Cuban jazz. His most recent project, Irakere 40, was a celebration of Irakere, a band that, with its bold fusion of Afro-Cuban ritual music, popular Afro- Cuban music styles, jazz and rock, marked a before and after in Latin jazz. The extensive 2015 U.S. tour of Chucho Valdés: Irakere 40 was accompanied by the release of Live at Marciac (Jazz Village /Comanche Music) recorded at the Jazz in Marciac festival in France earlier that year.
Exceptional pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba – born in 1963 in post-revolutionary Havana – has become a true icon in the modern Jazz world. He absorbed culture as well as the traditional and folkloric Cuban forms of song and dance from his early environment. With fifteen Grammy nominations and four Grammy Awards under his belt, Gonzalo Rubalcaba has undoubtedly proven himself as an established force in the modern Jazz world. In whatever idiom he works, Rubalcaba’s future musical creations will be melodious, rhythmic and exciting. He continues to transform the daily routines of our lives into something more beautiful and significant.
