차세대 재즈 리더들과 함께하는 조슈아 레드맨의 혁신적인 트리오
색소포니스트 조슈아 레드맨은 1969년, 프리재즈를 연주하는 거장 색소포니스트 듀이 레드맨(Dewey Redman)의 아들로 태어났다. 자연스럽게 어린 시절부터 음악을 시작해 9살에 클라리넷을, 10살에 테너 색소폰을 연주했다. 음악과는 무관하게 하버드 대학에서 사회학을 전공했지만 1991년 델로니어스 몽크 컴피티션에서 우승하며 음악가의 길을 걷게 되었다.
1993년 첫 앨범 <Joshua Redman>이 호평을 받으며 성공적으로 데뷔했고 1990년대 영라이언에서 2000년대 젊은 거장으로 승승장구했다. 2000년 비영리 재즈 단체 SF JAZZ의 봄 시즌 예술감독으로 임명되었고, 2004년 진취적인 성향의 재즈 그룹 SF JAZZ Collective를 결성해 2007년까지 뛰어난 성과를 남겼다. 이후 리더작에 집중해 어쿠스틱 앨범 <Back East>(2007), 발라드 앨범 <Walking Shadows>(2013), 배드 플러스와의 협연작 <The Bad Plus Joshua Redman>(2015) 등을 발표했다. 2016년에는 브래드 멜다우(Brad Mehldau)와 피아노-색소폰 듀오 앨범 <Nearness>을 선보여 화제가 되었다. 이렇듯 조슈아 레드맨은 최우수 모범생의 길을 걸어왔다. 하지만 평가에 만족하지 않고 전통과 진보에 대한 고민을 거듭하고 노력한다는 점이야 말로 그를 현존하는 최고의 색소포니스트로 빛나게 한다.
2005년 자라섬국제재즈페스티벌에 일래스틱 밴드로 내한했던 조슈아 레드맨이 올해는 베이시스트 Reuben Rogers, 드러머 Kendrick Scott과 함께 트리오 공연을 선보인다. 1974년생인 Reuben Rogers는 17살에 마커스 로버츠 트리오(Marcus Roberts Trio)로 활동을 시작해 찰스 로이드(Charles Lloyd), 윈튼 마살리스(Wynton Marsalis), 다이안 리브스(Dianne Reeves) 등과 함께 하며 실력을 인정받았다. Kendrick Scott은 그보다 어린 1980년생이다. 2006년 로버트 글래스퍼(Robert Glasper), 리오넬 루에케(Lionel Loueke) 등이 참여한 데뷔작 <The Source>를 발표했고 2015년에는 블루노트에 입성해 <We Are the Drum>을 발표했다. 아직은 낯선 이름이지만 거장의 곁에서 수많은 공연과 수십 장의 앨범에 참여하며 실력을 쌓았고 새로운 세대의 재즈 리더로 발돋움하고 있는 연주자들이다. 음악에 대한 천부적인 감각과 전방위적이라 할 만큼 다양한 악기와 장르를 섭렵한다는 점도 이들의 강점이다.
조슈아 레드맨은 그동안 신구(新舊)를 막론하고 실력파 연주자들과 혁신적인 음악을 선보여 왔다. 그런 그가 이번에는 Reuben Rogers, Kendrick Scott과 함께 음악적 민낯이 고스란히 드러나는 트리오를 결성했다. 그 결과는 자라섬에서 확인할 수 있다.

Born in Berkeley, California, he is the son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff. He was exposed at an early age to a variety of musics (jazz, classical, rock, soul, Indian, Indonesian, Middle-Eastern, African) and instruments (recorder, piano, guitar, gatham, gamelan), and began playing clarinet at age nine before switching to what became his primary instrument, the tenor saxophone, one year later. The early influences of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Cannonball Adderley and his father, Dewey Redman, as well as The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, the Temptations, Earth, Wind and Fire, Prince, The Police and Led Zeppelin drew Joshua more deeply into music.
Joshua Redman has been nominated for 3 Grammys and has garnered top honors in critics and readers polls of DownBeat, Jazz Times, The Village Voice and Rolling Stone. He wrote and performed the music for Louis Malle’s final film Vanya on 42 nd Street, and is both seen and heard in the Robert Altman film Kansas City.
He will perform in Jarasum with bassist Reuben Rogers who is one of the most distinctive and in-demand bassists in modern jazz and drummer Kendrick Scott who is one of the bright stars in an amazingly talented group of young drummers on the scene today.
