불혹(不惑)의 연주자들이 선사하는 북유럽 재즈의 미래, 야콥 영 밴드
북유럽 재즈의 신성에서, 이제는 ECM을 대표하는 아티스트로 자리매김한 기타리스트 야콥 영이 2007년에 이어 11년 만에 자라섬국제재즈페스티벌을 찾는다. 당시 트럼페터 마티아스 아익(Mathias Eick), 베이스 클라리넷 연주자 비다르 요한센(Vidar Johansen), 베이시스트 맷츠 에일레르트센(Mats Eilertsen), 드러머 욘 크리스텐센(Jon Christensen)과 내한해 뛰어난 무대를 선사했다. 올해는 더욱 큰 기대감을 갖게 한다. 노르웨이의 거장 색소포니스트 Trygve Seim, 폴란드의 신성이라 불리는 Marcin Wasilewski Trio가 야콥 영의 좌우를 든든하게 받쳐주고 있기 때문이다. Trygve Seim은 첫 내한으로, 2001년 ECM에서 발표한 첫 앨범 <Different Rivers>가 독일 비평가 협회상을 수상하며 주목을 받았다. 얀 가바렉(Jan Garbarek)의 후계자로 불리기도 하지만 장르와 스타일을 넘어선 우리 시대의 색소포니스트로 인정받고 있다. 2012년 토마쉬 스탄코 퀄텟(Tomasz Stanko Quartet)으로 내한했던 Marcin Wasilewski Trio는 재즈계를 이끌어갈 피아노 트리오로 손꼽힌다.
1970년 노르웨이 릴레함메르에서 태어난 야콥 영은 미국인 아버지의 영향으로 12세 때 부터 기타를 연주했다. 오슬로 대학에서 음악을 전공한 후 미국으로 건너가 뉴스쿨과 맨하탄 음대에서 재즈를 공부했다. 짐 홀(Jim Hall), 존 애버크롬비(John Abercrombie), 케니 워너(Kenny Werner) 등을 사사하며 현대 재즈의 경향성(모던 크리에이티브)에 북유럽의 서정성을 접목한, 자신만의 음악을 일찌감치 완성했다. 특히 짐 홀의 영향을 받은 따뜻하고 빛나는 톤은 그의 트레이드마크이기도 하다. 1995년 피아니스트 래리 골딩스(Larry Goldings)가 참여한 첫 앨범 <This Is You>를 발표했고 2002년 ECM으로 이적해 <Evening Falls>(2004), <Sideways>(2008) 등을 발표했다. 2013년 Trygve Seim, Marcin Wasilewski Trio와 밴드를 결성해 미국과 유럽 투어를 선보였으며, 그 결과물로 2014년 <Forever Young>을 발표했다.
흔히 재즈를 마흔부터 시작되는 음악이라고 한다. 그만큼 연륜이 필요한 음악이라는 의미다. 이제 40대에 들어선 야콥 영(1970년생), Trygve Seim(1971년생), Marcin Wasilewski(1975년생), Slawomir Kurkiewicz(1975년생), Michal Miskiewicz(1977년생)는 음악적 전성기를 꽃피우며 북유럽 재즈의 미래를 그려가고 있다.

Born in Lillehammer in 1970, Young was introduced to jazz by his American father. At the age of 12, he took up the guitar and was, initially, self-taught on the instrument. After studying music at the University of Oslo, he received a scholarship to the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in Manhattan. His years there were devoted to learning the standard jazz repertoire as a starting point for a broader understanding of improvised harmonic music.
His recording debut as a leader came in 1994 with this stellar group of talented young musicians; Nils Petter Molvær, Larry Goldings, Bendik Hofseth, Terje Gewelt and Per Oddvar Johansen.
He started to play festivals and small tours in Norway. After returning from New York City to live in Oslo, Norway in 1996 he formed a quintet with Trygve Seim, Vigleik Storaas, Mats Eilertsen and Per Oddvar Johansen and recorded his second album “Pieces of Time” for the Curling Legs label. Around this time legendary Norwegian jazz singer Karin Krog contacted Jacob after hearing him play on the radio. The two started a collaboration together, which includes the John Surman produced album “Where Flamingos Fly” from 2001 and regular touring all over the world for several years as a duo.
In 2002, he was booked by the Kongsberg Jazzfestival with a quintet to do a concert with original material, this was the start of the Jacob Young Group, his main focus to this day. Jacob has played guitar as a sideman on and off with artists such as Bendik Hofseth, Jan Erik Vold, Knut Riisnæs, Ivan Mazuze, Sidiki Camara, Bugge Wesseltoft, Karin Krog, Trygve Seim, The Source, Manu Katche, Allessandro Galati and the jazz/rock trio Interstatic co-led with Roy Powell and Jarle Vespestad.
