현재진행형의 퓨전 재즈 거장, 리 릿나워 & 데이브 그루신
지금처럼 인터넷이 발달하지 않았던 시절, 음악을 접하는 채널은 대개 ‘전영혁의 음악세계’ ‘배철수의 음악캠프’ 같은 라디오였다. 80~90년대 미국 재즈씬을 휩쓸던 퓨전·스무드 재즈를 전파한 것도, 국내 재즈 마니아 양산을 이끈 것도, 바로 라디오였다. 그 시절 우리를 열광하게 했던 GRP 사단의 대장 데이브 그루신과 리 릿나워가 함께 자라섬을 찾는다.
GRP 레이블의 설립자이기도 한 데이브 그루신은 피아니스트, 영화음악 작곡가, 프로듀서 등 전방위적인 활동을 펼쳐왔다. 60년대부터 영화음악가로 활동해 <졸업> <하바나> 등의 음악을 담당했으며 1988년 작 <반항의 계절(The Milagro Beanfield War)>로 아카데미 음악상을 수상했다. 재즈 팬들에게는
(1983)에 수록된 ‘Bossa Baroque’로 더욱 유명하다. ‘캡틴 핑거’라는 별명을 가진 기타리스트 리 릿나워는 1976년 로 데뷔했다. 이미 마마스 앤 파파스(Mamas & Papas)나 스티비 원더(Stevie Wonder) 등과 함께 하며 세션 기타리스트로 유명세를 떨치던 그는 첫 앨범이 성공하면서 단번에 리더로서 입지를 다졌다. 이후 GRP 레코드로 이적해 자신의 앨범과 GRP 수퍼세션을 오가며 퓨전 재즈의 전성기를 이끌었다. 1991년에는 밥 제임스(Bob James), 네이던 이스트(Nathan East), 하비 메이슨(Harvey Mason)과 함께 포플레이(Fourplay)를 결성해 98년까지 활동했다.
80년대 GRP 레코드에서 만난 데이브 그루신과 리 릿나워는 재즈와 팝, 브라질 음악 등을 공통분모로 가지고 있었다. 이들이 의기투합한 (1985년)이 큰 인기를 끌었으며 수록곡 ‘Early A.M. Attitude’로 그래미어워드를 수상했다. 이후에도 듀엣에 대한 팬들의 요청은 꾸준히 이어졌고 2000년대 들어 (2000), (2008)를 선보이기도 했다. 두 앨범이 데이브 그루신을 중심으로 한 클래식 크로스오버 앨범이었다면, 자라섬에서 만날 수 있는 공연은 리 릿나워를 주축으로 한 퓨전 스타일이다. 베이스에는 90년대부터 리 릿나워와 함께 해온 Melvin Davis가 함께하고, 드럼에는 리 릿나워의 2006년 앨범 로 데뷔한 아들 Wes Ritenour가 함께 한다. 퓨전 재즈가 ‘왕년의’ 음악이라고 생각하면 오산. 이들의 공연은 자라섬을 최고의 축제로 만들어줄 현재진행형의 재즈를 선사할 것이다.

Grammy Award winning guitarist Lee Ritenour received a rich cross section of exposure to jazz, rock and Brazilian music. From one of his first sessions at 16 with the Mamas and Papas to accompanying Lena Horne and Tony Bennett at 18, his forty years eclectic and storied career is highlighted by a Grammy Award win for his 1986 collaboration with Dave Grusin, Harlequin; 17 Grammy nominations; numerous #1 spots in guitar polls and the prestigious “Alumnus of the Year” award from USC. He has recorded over 40 albums, with 35 chart songs, notably the Top 15 hit “Is It You,” which has become a contemporary jazz radio classic.
Dave Grusin has achieved high levels of success in his career as a performer, producer, composer, arranger, and bandleader. As a pianist, Grusin tends toward the fusion and smooth end of jazz, but he”s also an accomplished film and television soundtrack composer. Grusin played with Terry Gibbs and Johnny Smith while studying at the University of Colorado, was the assistant music director and pianist for Andy Williams from 1959 to 1966. He also maintained a rich career through the 60s and 70s, recording with such greats as Benny Goodman, Don Lamond, Thad Jones, Frank Foster, Quincy Jones, Carmen McCrae, and Gerry Mulligan. As a long-time bandleader of the illustrious GRP All-Star band, he also helped to establish GRP Records out of a production company. GRP developed into one of the top contemporary jazz and fusion companies.
Guitarist Lee Ritenour and keyboard player Dave Grusin had already met at an early stage in their careers. During the 1980s they made albums together, like the Grammy Award-winning Harlequin and GRP Live In Session. In 2000 the duo came together again to record the well-received album Two Worlds. This was followed eight years later by Amparo.
