팝부터 아방가르드 재즈까지 아우르는 서정적이고 우아한 앙상블
올해 새 앨범 <Goldbrun>의 발표를 앞두고 있는 색소폰 연주자 유리 호닝은 1990년부터 지금까지 꾸준히 활동해 왔으며, 컨템포러리 재즈라는 이름 하에 자유롭고 다양한 연주를 선보여 온 음악가다. 그는 1996년 발표한 <Star Tracks>라는 음반을 통해 영미권에서 인지도를 얻기 시작했다. 유리 호닝은 아바(ABBA)부터 뷰욕(Bjork)까지 다양한 팝 스타의 곡을 재해석하였으며, 선곡과 시도 모두 긍정적인 반응을 얻었다. 이후 그는 <Sequel>이라는 앨범을 발표해 그러한 시도의 연장선을 선보이기도 했다. 그렇다고 해서 유리 호닝이 이러한 커버 작업으로만 알려진 것은 아니다. 오히려 이는 그의 음악 세계를 보여주는 한 부분에 불과하다. 자국인 네덜란드의 위대한 음악가 미샤 멩겔베르그(Misha Mengelberg)와 협업한 것은 물론, 그는 특정 이미지에 구애 받지 않고 모던 재즈부터 컨템포러리 재즈와 아방가르드까지 다양한 음악을 거침없이 내놓았다. 2000년대 후반에는 일렉트릭 밴드인 와이어드 파라다이스(Wired Paradise)를 통해 록과 전자음악 사운드를 적극 기용하여 기타가 두 대 들어가는 편성으로 관능적인 음악을 표현하기도 했다. 화려함과 차분함을 오가는 완급조절이 필요한 이런 음악이 가능했던 것은 자유롭고 창조적인 동시에 실력까지 겸비하고 있기 때문이다. 그는 폴 블레이(Paul Bley), 게리 피콕(Gary Peacock)을 포함한 여러 거장들과의 협연에서도 뒤쳐지거나 밀리지 않았고, 오히려 주도적이었다. 최근 그는 유리 호닝 어쿠스틱 퀄텟을 구성하여 앨범을 발표하고 있다. 와이어드 파라다이스(Wired Paradise) 때와는 다른, 서정적이고 우아한 음악을 들려주고 있으며 여전히 독특하고 감각적인 선곡을 선보인다.

Yuri Honing is one of Holland’s most important saxophone players (according to the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD and the Oxford Introduction to jazz) with touring experience in over 90 countries and a discography of almost 40 titles.
For years, Dutch saxophonist Yuri Honing has been considered one of the main representatives of European jazz, as a result of his successful Yuri Honing Trio. The record Star Tracks (1996) caused his international breakthrough - Honing built a unique personal style, based on jazz, pop and non-western musical traditions.
Since a couple of years Honing leads his acoustic quartet with pianist Wolfert Brederode, Icelandic bass player Gulli Gudmundsson and Dutch drummer Joost Lijbaart. The group toured and performed at major festivals in Europe, Asia and South America.
The album “Desire” from the group was released in the beginning of 2015. For this album, Yuri used influences from jazz, church music, contemporary pop music and modern classical music. Desire can be considered as Yuri’s most personal album. Not only was Desire declared best jazz album of the year, it was also Holland’s no.1 best- selling album in 2015.
