유럽 재즈를 대표하는 아티스트들로 구성된 수퍼밴드
포 휠 드라이브(4 Wheel Drive)는 유럽 재즈를 대표하는 아티스트들로 구성된 수퍼밴드다. 트롬본과 보컬은 Nils Landgren, 피아노는 Michael Wollny, 베이스는 Lars Danielsson, 그리고 드럼은 Wolfgang Haffner가 맡고 있다. 엔진 구동력을 네 바퀴 모두에 전달하여 강한 힘과 접지력을 구현한 자동차 기술을 일컫는 포 휠 드라이브(4WD)라는 이름에서 알 수 있듯이 어느 한 명의 리드가 아닌 네 명 모두가 함께 음악을 이끌어 나간다는걸 의미한다. 이들은 이미 오래 전부터 수많은 앨범과 프로젝트를 통해 서로 합을 맞춰본 경험이 있지만, 이렇게 네 명이 온전히 같이 팀을 이룬 것은 이번이 처음이다.
Nils Landgren은 스웨덴 출신으로, 재즈, 팝, 클래식 등 장르에 관계없이 어떤 음악도 소화해낼 수 있는 아티스트로 정평이 나있다. 트롬본 외에도 보컬리스트이자 제작자로서 많은 활동을 하고 있다. 독일에서 태어난 Michael Wollny는 클래식과 즉흥음악 양쪽 모두에 대한 이해가 깊다. 그의 음악을 소개할 때마다 프란츠 슈베르트(Franz Schubert)와 뷰욕(Björk)이 동시에 거론될 만큼 음악적 스펙트럼이 넓고 독특하다. 유럽에서 현재 가장 대표적인 베이시스트이자 프로듀서인 Lars Danielsson은 스웨덴 출신으로, 1980년대부터 유럽과 미국의 다양한 재즈 아티스트들과 함께 활동했으며, 북유럽 특유의 서정적이면서도 세련된 감성이 담긴 음악으로 많은 사랑을 받고 있다. 독일 최고의 드러머로 손꼽히는 Wolfgang Haffner는 재즈 뿐만 아니라 록과 힙합, 전자음악 등 대중음악을 하는 아티스트들과도 활발하게 교류하고 있다.
이들은 전에도 각자의 앙상블과 함께 자라섬재즈페스티벌을 찾은 적이 있다. 그러나 2018년 말에 첫 앨범을 발표한 포 휠 드라이브는 이번에 처음으로 자라섬 무대에 오른다. 포 휠 드라이브를 위해 각자 새롭게 작곡한 곡들 외에도 폴 매카트니(Paul McCartney), 빌리 조엘(Billy Joel), 스팅(Sting) 등 팝스타들의 명곡도 재즈로 들려줄 예정이다.
4 Wheel Drive as an ensemble is like a high-performance four-cylinder engine with all the gears meshing perfectly. And the fuel: jazz. The title of the album and the project reflects the equal role which each of the four musicians has had in setting the direction for the quartet. They take to the road together, both as superb soloists and as team players.
It scarcely feels necessary to mention the pre-eminent status of all four of these artists, because that is evident from hearing the music. When Nils Landgren brings such feeling to his own melody “Le chat sur le toit”, or when Michael Wollny dazzles with the blues-infused piano solo in “Lady Madonna”; when “Polygon” opens with a bass intro from Lars Danielsson, or when Wolfgang Haffner sets up the power groove to propel “4WD”, then it’s clear what’s happening: four leading figures in European jazz who know each other well and who have appreciated each other’s work for many years have now got together. True, their paths have crossed many times before, and in all kinds of configurations. The formidable duo of Landgren and Wollny comes to mind, for example, as does Haffner’s long-term role as an anchor in the Funk Unit, or Danielsson's vivid bass presence in Haffner's trio…but here for the very first time are the four friends as a quartet. They decided to record an album together at the Nilento Studio in Gothenburg: 4 Wheel Drive. In addition to one original composition from each of them, Landgren, Wollny, Danielsson and Haffner also decided that they would focus on four living creative forces from the recent history of music and interpret their tunes, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Phil Collins and Sting.
