뚜렷한 개성을 지닌 칼라하의 일렉트로닉 재즈와 소리꾼 김보라의 만남
덴마크 출신의 재즈 아티스트 두 명과 일렉트로닉 아티스트 두 명으로 구성된 칼라하(Kalaha)는, 그 조합에서 알 수 있듯이 일렉트로닉 재즈 스타일을 기반으로 하고 있지만, 멤버 각자가 지니고 있는 다양한 음악적, 문화적 배경과 경험 덕분에 상당히 다채로운 음악을 선보인다.
퍼커션과 드럼을 맡고 있는 Emil de Waal은 80년대부터 재즈 훵크 밴드로 활동을 시작하여, 영화, 드라마, 뮤지컬 음악에도 참여했으며, 법률을 전공하여 음악 저작권과 관련한 업무는 물론 영화사를 운영하고 있는 등 이색적인 경력도 가지고 있다. 미국에서 음악을 전공한 기타리스트 Niclas Knudsen은 미국과 유럽에서 재즈, 록, 일렉트로닉 등 여러 장르에서 활동하고 있으며, 현재 칼라하 외에도 6개의 다른 프로젝트에 참여하고 있다. 각각 디제잉과 라이브 일렉트로닉, 프로듀싱 등 다방면에서 활동하고 있는 Rumpistol과 Spejderrobot은 칼라하의 일렉트로닉 사운드를 담당하고 있는데, Rumpistol은 신서사이저 등 다양한 키보드를 활용하고, Spejderrobot은 랩탑과 사운드모듈을 활용하여 칼라하만의 독특한 사운드를 만들어낸다. 특히 Spejderrobot은 양 손과 한 쪽 다리가 없는 장애를 가지고 있지만, 누구의 도움도 없이 랩탑과 믹서의 다양한 키와 노브를 직접 능숙하게 조작해낸다.
이처럼 뚜렷한 개성과 음악성을 가진 네 명의 아티스트는 각 나라의 전통음악을 자연스럽게 받아들여 덴마크나 유럽에 국한되지 않는 월드뮤직 스타일의 일렉트로닉 재즈를 선보인다. 특히 지난 4월에 발표한 앨범 [Mandala]에서는 평소 교류하던 여러 나라의 아티스트와 함께 녹음한 곡들을 수록했는데, 그 중에는 대금 연주자 이아람을 중심으로 세련된 감각의 창작국악을 선보이고 있는 음악그룹 나무(Music Group NaMu)가 참여한 ‘Dakke’라는 곡도 담겨있다. 이처럼 한국 전통음악에도 관심이 많은 칼라하는 자라섬재즈페스티벌 무대를 위해 전통과 창작 국악 모두에서 뛰어난 실력으로 주목받고 있는 소리꾼 김보라를 보컬리스트로 초청했다. 최근 국악과 전자음악을 성공적으로 접목한 신노이(SINNOI)라는 프로젝트로 주목받고 있는 김보라는 칼라하와의 협연으로 이번 무대를 매우 색다르게 꾸밀 예정이다.
When Kalaha embark on their musical journey, the sounds crackle, bubble and crunch, so no one really knows if it’s Malinese desert rock played by nomadic tribes of Denmark’s migrating dune Råbjerg Mile, world music from your older brother’s old Amiga or an Iranian wedding party, celebrating a marriage between Daft Punk and Chick Corea – with Ali Farka Toure as the Master of Ceremonies. In recent years Kalaha have put themselves in the pole position when it comes to total genre boundary demolition, and the group mercilessly merge their personal artistic expression with musical impressions from around the globe. The listener is catapulted through fiercely kaleidoscopic party music; at one moment grooving at an electronic street party and throwing themselves into a euphoric tribal dance the next.
And in the middle of all this partying one senses a pensive approach to the sound of a globalized world. There’s no doubt that Kalaha’s music is the kind that shouts you in the face, commanding you to loosen your tie and join the dance, but when you listen carefully, there’s also a quiet whisper in there, asking you to think of the world as a playground, and you’re invited to join Kalaha in their musical jungle gym. The view from the top offers a veritable firework display of sound, playfulness and philanthropic electro-ethno-jazz. The Kalaha crew are seasoned musicians that have covered a lot of ground in Denmark’s musical landscape.
