21세기 퓨전 재즈의 새로운 대안이 될 강력하고 화려한 사운드
덴마크 출신의 건반연주자 모튼 샨츠(Morten Schantz)는 “21세기의 웨더 리포트(Weather Report)”라고 불릴만큼 포스트 퓨전 재즈계에서 실험성 강한 음악으로 주목받고 있다. 신서사이저를 통해 독특한 전자음을 자유자재로 만들어내고, 여기에 서사적인 테마를 담아 독특한 구성으로 연출하는 그의 음악 스타일은, 허비 핸콕(Herbie Hancock)과 칙 코리아(Chick Corea), 조 자비눌(Joe Zawinul)과 같은 퓨전 시대 거장들의 행보를 이어갈 아티스트라는 평가를 이끌어냈다. 모튼 샨츠는 지금까지 유럽 내에서 약 십여 장의 앨범을 발표했고, 지난 2017년에는 [GODSPEED]라는 제목의 앨범을 처음으로 전세계에 출시하면서, 같은 이름의 프로젝트로 활동하고 있다. 모튼 샨츠와 오랫동안 호흡을 맞춰온 드러머 Anton Eager와 색소포니스트 마리우스 네셋(Marius Neset)이 이 프로젝트를 함께하고 있다.
모튼 샨츠 갓스피드에서 Anton Eager는 빠르고 정교한 연주로 모튼 샨츠의 신서사이저가 만들어내는 전자음의 세계를 쉴틈없이 분할하여 다이나믹하게 몰아붙인다. 이러한 조합은 브레드 멜다우(Brad Mehldau)와 마크 줄리아나(Mark Guiliana) 듀오가 만들어내는 강력한 하모니를 떠올리게 한다. 그러나 모튼 샨츠와 Anton Eager의 조합은 좀더 섬세하고 서정적이며, 이는 자칫 기계적으로 들릴 수 있는 두 파트 사이를 집요하게 파고드는 색소폰 연주 덕분이다. 이번 자라섬 무대에서는 마리우스 네셋을 대신하여 Josh Arcoleo가 색소폰을 맡을 예정이며, 색소폰 외에도 베이스 기타와 추가적인 신서사이저 연주를 더해 보다 확장된 화려한 사운드를 선보일 예정이다.
Morten Schantz is a pianist, composer and bandleader born 1980 in Aarhus, Denmark. Schantz has won several awards based on his work as well as receiving two Grammy nominations for his solo work. He has released 10 albums as a leader or co-leader and toured all over the world since breaking through in 2005.
In January 2017 he released [GODSPEED], his first solo album on an international record label after signing with Edition Records. The album was received to great critical acclaim all over the world. GODSPEED is a hi-octane, heavyweight trio lead by critically acclaimed Danish keyboardist and composer, Morten Schantz. Often compared to legendary Weather Report, GODSPEED is pointing out a new direction in music that transcends genres.
Morten Schantz returns with a new band under his own name that has a very unique sound which could serve as a benchmark for the future. With a wealth of keyboards at his disposal Schantz uses influences from electronica, classical and pop music to create his very own brand. GODSPEED impress with their highly energetic, complex, yet accessible music which has the sensibilities to capture big audiences around the world. This trio represents some of the most vital new music bursting out of the European scene from some of the most important performers.
