뉴올리언스 재즈와 아방가르드의 익살스런 결합
홀스 오케스트라(Horse Orchestra)는 덴마크 코펜하겐에 위치한 예술학교에서 만난 일곱명의 젊은 음악가들이 의기투합하여 2011년에 결성한 독특하고 흥미로운 재즈 밴드다. 이들은 저마다 아이슬란드, 노르웨이, 덴마크, 스웨덴 등 국적도 다르고 문화적 배경도 서로 달랐지만, 재즈를 통해 좀더 미래지향적인 새로운 형태의 음악을 만들어보자는 공감대가 있었다. 그 결과로 탄생한 홀스 오케스트라는 현재 북유럽 재즈씬에서 가장 실험적이고 파격적인 재즈 밴드로 평가받고 있다. 흔히 실험적인 음악이라고 하면, 난해하고 공감하기 어려운 음악을 떠올리게 마련이다. 일반적인 음악 작법과 구성을 따르지 않는 홀스 오케스트라의 음악도 마찬가지로 처음 들었을 땐 이해하기가 쉽지 않지만, 이들의 음악을 한 번 듣기 시작하면 왠지 모르게 자연스레 이끌리고 동화되는 기분을 느끼게 된다. 그것은 바로 홀스 오케스트라가 다루고 있는 음악의 원천이 1920년대 뉴올리언스 재즈이기 때문이다. 연주하는 곡을 전혀 몰라도 흥겹게 리듬을 타고 춤을 출 수 있었던 그 당시 재즈를 바탕으로 1960년대 프리재즈의 실험적인 스타일을 접목한 탓에, 홀스 오케스트라의 음악은 낯설면서도 동시에 익숙하게 다가온다. 이런 음악을 표현하기 위해 홀스 오케스트라는 악기 구성에도 신경을 썼는데, 1920년대 뉴올리언스의 캄보밴드나 빅밴드 같은 사운드를 낼 수 있도록 트럼펫과 트롬본, 색소폰으로 구성되는 혼 섹션을 전면에 내세우고, 여기에 강력한 저음을 만들어내는 튜바를 추가하여 리듬을 강화하고 사운드를 더욱 풍성하게 만들었다. 그리고 홀스 오케스트라가 연주와 작곡 만큼이나 중요하게 생각하는 것이 바로 유머다. 집시풍의 익살스런 의상과 자유분방한 퍼포먼스는 관객들이 좀더 친숙하게 이들의 무대에 가까이 다가갈 수 있게 해준다. 그러니 자라섬에서 홀스 오케스트라의 연주가 울려퍼진다면 흥겹게 몸이 가는데로 리듬을 타볼 것을 권한다.
Horse Orchestra is an important new band on the modern Nordic jazz scene. The band members succeed in combining parts of the history of jazz with modern barrier-breaking musical experiments. Classical jazz compositions from 1920's New Orleans meet free jazz from the '60's as well as modern classical music, and it all ends up in an original, postmodernistic style that has no equivalent on the Nordic jazz scene.
Horse Orchestra consists of seven young musicians from Iceland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, and the band is a testimony to a new generation of musicians, who master their musical historical legacy and try to help modern jazz music reach new heights. For Horse Orchestra humor is just as important an element as the instrumental equilibrism and the compelling compositions. In this way, the humorous and flourishing music is so infectious that you happily engage with the orchestra's occasionally extreme tonal experiments.
The orchestra's debut album, [Living the Dream], was released in September 2014 and won two Danish Music Awards in 2015 in the categories “New Jazz Name of the Year” and “Special Release of the Year”. In October 2016 Horse Orchestra released their second album, Four Letter Word, to great reviews and in December 2018 the orchestra released their first a video-EP.
