열정적인 플라멩코 리듬위로 우아하게 펼쳐지는 재즈 선율
모린 초이 퀄텟(Maureen Choi Quartet)은 한국계 미국인 바이올리니스트인 모린 초이의 재즈 앙상블이다. 모린 초이는 5살 때부터 바이올린을 연주하기 시작하여, 미시간 주립 대학교에서 클래식을 전공했다. 그러나 재즈 베이시스트 로드니 휘테커(Rodney Whitaker)에게 받은 레슨을 계기로 재즈의 매력에 눈을 뜨게 됐고, 당시 겪은 불의의 교통사고로 회복을 위해 2년간 쉬면서 재즈 아티스트가 되기로 결심한다. 이후 버클리 음대에서 재즈를 전공하면서, 현재 모린 초이 퀄텟의 베이시스트이자 인생의 동반자인 Mario Carrillo를 만나게 됐고, 스페인에서 온 그를 비롯한 주위의 동료들로부터 스페인과 라틴 음악을 접하게 된다. 이때부터 플라멩코와 살사에 매료된 모린 초이는, 스페인으로 이주하여 모린 초이 퀄텟으로 본격적인 음악 활동을 시작한다. 2013년 스페인의 음악 경연 대회에서 1등으로 선정된 모린 초이 퀄텟은 이후 각종 페스티벌과 클럽 무대를 돌며 스페인 전역에 이름을 알렸고, 계속해서 유럽과 아시아, 호주 등에서도 초청을 받아 활동 무대를 넓혀나갔다. 자신이 태어나고 자란 미국에서도 여러 차례 성공적인 투어를 해낸 모린 초이 퀄텟은 이제 국제적으로 인정받는 커리어를 쌓아나가고 있다.
모린 초이 퀄텟은 지난 2018년 스페인 마드리드의 예술극장인 아를레킨 극장(Teatro Arlequín Gran Vía)의 후원 아티스트로 발탁됐고, 현재 스페인 국립 발레단과도 협업하고 있다. 그리고 올해에는 스페인 정부의 문화기관인 세르반테스 협회(Instituto Cervantes)의 공식 후원으로 세계 각국을 돌며 공연 중이다. 이제 곧 자라섬을 방문하는 모린 초이 퀄텟은 열정적인 플라멩코 리듬 위로 우아하게 펼쳐지는 재즈 선율을 통해 관객들의 마음을 들뜨게 만들 것이다.
North American violinist of Korean origin, Maureen Choi is shaking up the landscape of improvised music in Spain. Inspired by the sounds and rhythms of the Spanish Diaspora, classical music and jazz, her music is best described as “Spanish Chamber Jazz”. Through her work, we travel from the beauty of classical music to the power of flamenco, going through the most varied echoes of Spanish folklore and Latin rhythms. Her music, multicultural and timeless, merges Spain, Latin America, USA and Asia.
Due to the exceptional and unusual composition of this jazz band, led by a female violinist, Maureen Choi Quartet has attracted the attention of many national and international jazz festivals. Breaking genre pre-conceptions became [Ida y Vuelta], the 1st album with her current line-up: Daniel García on Piano, Mario Carrillo on Bass and Michael Olivera on Drums. After 6 years playing together, more than 400 concerts all over Spain, 3 USA tours, and great reviews on specialized media like Downbeat or All About Jazz, the band has reached a level of maturity, interconnectedness, finesse and musicality that is hard to explain. Choi´s unique ability to take the audience on a deeply emotional journey through her violin is unparalleled. The new album [THEIA] is the musical consequence of the band’s evolution, as individuals and as a collective.
