뉴올리언즈 음악씬의 바닥부터 정상까지 모두 섭렵한 관록의 아티스트
존 클리어리는 뉴올리언즈를 기반으로 활동하고 있는 싱어송라이터이자 키보디스트로, 뉴올리언즈 R&B를 바탕으로 블루스, 재즈, 훵크, 소울 등 다양한 장르를 아우르는 아티스트다. 호소력 짙은 목소리에 뉴올리언즈 특유의 열정적인 쇼맨쉽까지 갖춘 존 클리어리는, 재즈 탄생의 자양분이 됐던 이 지역 전통 음악에 대한 해박한 지식과 깊은 이해를 바탕으로 뉴올리언즈에서 큰 사랑을 받고 있으며, 앨범 [Go Go Juice](2015)로 제58회 그래미 시상식에서 지역 전통 음악 분야에 시상하는 ‘Best Regional Roots Music Album’상을 수상하기도 했다.
그러나 존 클리어리는 사실 영국에서 태어나고 자랐으며, 성인이 될 때까지는 뉴올리언즈에 한 번도 가보지 못했다. 어린 시절, 뉴올리언즈 여행을 마치고 돌아온 삼촌이 가져다준 뉴올리언즈 아티스트들의 LP를 접하게 된 것을 계기로 뉴올리언즈 음악을 동경하기 시작했고, 학교를 졸업하자마자 무작정 뉴올리언즈로 떠나 이 곳에서 본격적으로 음악을 시작했다. 뉴올리언즈의 역사적인 라이브 클럽인 메이플 리프 바에서 처음 연주를 시작한 존 클리어리는, 이후 그의 재능을 알아본 블루스 아티스트들의 투어 연주자로 발탁되는 등 서서히 이름을 알려나갔다. 이때부터 존 클리어리는 더 앱솔루트 몬스터 젠틀맨(The Absolute Monster Gentlemen)이라는 자신만의 밴드를 만들었고, 이때 만난 영국인 프로듀서 존 포터(John Porter)와 함께 제작한 데뷔 앨범 [Moonburn](1999)을 통해 미국 음악 시장에서 확실히 자리매김했다.
존 클리어리 & 더 앱솔루트 몬스터 젠틀맨의 멤버들은, 존 클리어리를 제외하고 모두 뉴올리언즈 출신이다. 하지만 처음 뉴올리언즈에 도착하여 메이플 리프 바에서 벽화를 그리는 아르바이트로 시작하여, 클럽의 하우스 연주자가 되고, 밴드를 결성하여 앨범을 발표하고, 타지 마할(Taj Mahal), 보니 레이트(Bonnie Raitt), 비비 킹(B. B. King) 등 블루스 레전드들과 함께 무대에 오르고, 그래미상까지 수상한 존 클리어리는 이제 뉴올리언즈 음악씬에서 빼놓을 수 없는 아티스트가 됐다.
Jon Cleary’s love and affinity for New Orleans music goes back to the rural British village where he was raised in a musical family. As a teen Cleary grew increasingly interested in funk-infused music. In 1981, Cleary flew to New Orleans for an initial pilgrimage and took a cab straight from the airport to the Maple Leaf Bar, a storied venue which then featured such great blues-rooted eclectic pianists as Roosevelt Sykes and James Booker. Cleary first worked at the Maple Leaf as a painter, but soon graduated to playing piano there – even though his first instrument was the guitar, which he still plays and has recently reintroduced into his live performances. Deciding to stay in New Orleans, Cleary had recorded his first album of eight including the new “GoGo Juice” in 1989. His increasingly high-profile performances revealed a level of proficient versatility that led to recording sessions and international touring work in the bands of Taj Mahal, John Scofield, Dr. John, and Bonnie Raitt.
Cleary has led his own group, the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, for over two decades now. Today, Cleary’s work pays obvious homage to the classic Crescent City keyboard repertoire while also using it as a launching pad for a style that incorporates such other diverse influences as ’70s soul and R&B, gospel music, funk, Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Cuban rhythms, and much more.
