사랑과 평화, 화합과 공감을 실천하고 있는 아프로쿠반 재즈의 대가
Omar Sosa는 자신이 태어난 쿠바의 음악적 뿌리라고 할 수 있는 아프리카 음악을 중심으로 라틴 음악을 꾸준히 선보여온 피아니스트이다. 8살 때부터 퍼커션과 마림바를 배운 그는, 이후 십대 시절부터 피아노를 연주하기 시작했고, 에콰도르를 거쳐 미국으로 이주하면서, 서서히 그의 음악적 재능을 세상에 알려나갔다. 퍼커션과 피아노, 그리고 라틴 음악에 대한 깊은 이해를 가진 Omar Sosa는 다양한 국적과 문화를 가진 연주자들과 교류하면서, 작곡과 연주 모든 면에서 특유의 리듬과 서정적인 멜로디는 물론, 다문화적인 스타일이 잘 드러나는 음악을 통해 라틴 재즈, 특히 아프로 쿠반(Afro-Cuban) 재즈의 대가로 인정받고 있다. 2003년에는 미국 스미스소니언 협회로부터 라틴 재즈를 널리 알린데 대한 업적을 인정받아 평생공로상을 수상하기도 했으며, 지금까지 록펠러 재단을 포함한 다양한 기관으로부터 후원을 받았고, 이는 그의 수많은 작품 활동으로 이어졌다. 1997년 첫 앨범 [Omar Omar] 이후 지금까지 약 20장이 넘는 앨범을 발표했으며, 그 밖에도 영화 음악과 무용 음악에도 참여하는 등 열정적인 창작 활동을 이어나가고 있다.
Omar Sosa는 2009년 스페인의 바르셀로나 재즈 페스티벌 무대에서 마일스 데이비스(Miles Davis)의 앨범 [Kind of Blue] 출시 50주년을 기념하는 특별한 작품을 선보였는데, 이 작품은 이후 2013년 [Eggun]이라는 앨범으로 발표됐다. [Kind of Blue]의 단순한 리메이크가 아닌, 완전히 새로운 해석으로 라틴 재즈를 넘어 전자 음악을 도입한 현대적인 스타일의 재즈를 성공적으로 들려줬다는 평가를 받았다. 2015년에는 Quarteto Afro Cubano를 결성하여 [Ilé]라는 앨범을 발표했는데, 고향 또는 지구를 뜻하는 앨범 제목 ‘Ilé’가 암시하듯 자신의 음악적 원천으로 돌아가 라틴 재즈를 감각적으로 표현해냈다. 쿠바 출신의 드러머 Ernesto Simpson과 뉴욕을 기반으로 한 색소포니스트 Peter Apfelbaum, 그리고 모잠비크 출신의 베이시스트 Childo Tomas가 함께했다. 2017년에는 드러머 Raul Pineda를 새로 영입했는데, 추초 발데스 퀄텟(Chucho Valdés Quartet)에서 활동하면서 그래미상을 수상한 쿠바 출신의 실력있는 연주자다.
늘 사랑과 평화, 그리고 다양한 문화간의 화합과 공감이라는 자신의 신념을 음악을 통해 표현해온 Omar Sosa는, 미국과 라틴 아메리카, 유럽의 아티스트는 물론 아시아권의 아티스트들과도 꾸준히 교류하면서 이를 실천하고 있다. 2008년과 2015년에도 각기 다른 프로젝트로 자라섬재즈페스티벌 무대에 올랐던 Omar Sosa는 현재 가장 활발하게 활동하고 있는 그의 Quarteto Afro Cubano를 통해 이번에도 라틴 재즈의 정수를 들려줄 예정이다.
Composer-pianist-bandleader Omar Sosa was born in 1965 in Camagüey, Cuba’s largest inland city. At age eight, Omar began studying percussion and marimba at the music conservatory in Camagüey; in Havana, as a teenager, he took up piano in Havana. Omar cites traditional Afro-Cuban music, European classical composers (including Chopin, Bartok, and Satie), Monk, Coltrane, Parker, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Chucho Valdés, and the pioneering Cuban jazz group Irakere.
Since he emigrated from Cuba in 1993, Omar Sosa has forged a distinctive musical path, fusing an array of jazz, world music, hip-hop, and electronic elements with his Afro-Cuban roots. Omar’s recording [ilé] marks a homecoming for the 7-timeGRAMMY-nominated pianist and composer to the Latin Jazz influences of his formative years in late ‘80s and early ‘90s Havana. Ilé means home, or earth, in the Lucumí tradition to his of Cuba, derived from the Yoruba language of West Africa, and it is to the Latin Jazz roots of his native Cuba that Omar returns for inspiration on this album.
Ilé offers contemporary interpretations of some of the classic Cuban musical styles the world has come to admire. Listeners will enjoy a mix of ballads and sophisticated mid and up tempo arrangements. Also included is a set of four atmospheric interludes, featuring tradition music samples combined with improvised piano and soprano saxophone accompaniment. Overall, the composite focus of the project is on ensemble playing. A noteworthy dimension is Omar’s use of the Fender Rhodes electric piano in equal measure with the acoustic grand piano.
