매혹적인 멜로디 메이커로 자신만의 스타일을 구축해나가는 차세대 재즈 뮤지션
서울예술대학, 버클리 음대, 뉴욕대학교, 그리고 아티스트 비자를 승인받고 뉴욕에서의
음악 활동을 거쳐 10년의 미국 생활을 마친 재즈 색소포니스트 남유선은 섬세하면서도
자신만의 스타일을 구축해나가는 차세대 재즈 뮤지션이다.
한국에서는 <2016년 재즈계의 새 얼굴>, <2018년 재즈의 소리- 색소폰 (주목해야할 3명의 색소포니스트편)> 라는 타이틀로 ‘EBS 스페이스 공감’에서 소개되며 본격적으로 알려지기 시작했으며, 2017년 영구 귀국 이후 한국에서 가장 활발히 활동하고 있는 아티스트들 중 한 명이기도 하다. 지금까지 총 두 장의 리더작을 발표하며 국내 재즈씬에서 자신만의 음악색을 구축해가는 중이다.
발매된 두 장의 앨범은 서로 다른 음악적 특징을 지니고 있는데, 뉴욕에서 녹음된 남유선의 데뷔작 [Light of the city](2015) 가 현대 재즈의 뉘앙스를 스스로에게 대입한 것이라면, 반대로 2집 앨범 [Strange, But Beautiful You](2018) 는 자신에게 맞는 최적의 어법을 찾기 위해 노력하는 과정에서 쟁취한 매우 뜻깊은 결과물로 손꼽힌다. 특히 2집 앨범에서는 내레이터로써의 자기 자리를 지키며, 공감대를 만들어내는 멜로디를 연주하고, 연주자들을 이끄는 매혹적인 ‘멜로디 메이커’로 다시 태어났다. 이 앨범은 물 흐르듯 자연스러운 정서적 흐름과 감상을 선사하는 탄탄한 응집력을 가진 사운드를 들려준다는 호평을 받으며 2019년 한국 대중음악상 최우수 재즈 앨범 부분에 노미네이트 되기도 하였다.
이번 자라섬 재즈 페스티발에서는 2집 앨범 작업 멤버이기도 한 기타리스트 오진원,
피아니스트 윤지희, 베이시스트 김영후, 드러머 김영진이 함께 한다. 수많은 라이브 무대를 통해
구축된 완성도 높은 남유선 퀸텟만의 사운드로 2집 수록곡 중심으로 다양한 레퍼토리들을
설득력 있게 펼쳐낼 예정이다.
Next-generation jazz musician who build her own styles as a fascinating melody maker
The Jazz Saxophonist Yoo Sun Nam is a next-generation jazz musician who built her own delicately style while completing her 10-year musician life with an artist visa in New York City, approved by the Seoul Arts Center, Berklee College of Music, and New York University.
In Korea, she was introduced in "EBS Space" titled <The new face of the jazz world in 2016>, <The sound of jazz-saxophone (the remarkable three saxophonists in 2018)> and became known to the public. She’s been one of the most active artists in Korea since she permanently moved back to Korea in 2017. So far, she released two leading albums building her own music colors in the domestic jazz scene.
The two released albums have different musical characteristics. While her debut album, [Light of the City](2015), recorded in New York, is a presentation of the nuance of modern jazz, the second album [Strange, But Beautiful You](2018) is regarded as a very meaningful achievement in the process of trying to find the right utterance of her musical path. Especially, she was reborn as a fascinating 'melody maker' in her second album, performing her own place as a narrator, playing a melody to create consensus, and leading other musicians. This album is well received by the sound of flowing, cohesive sound that gives a natural emotional flow and impression, and was nominated for the best jazz album of Korean pop music in 2019.
At this year’s Jarasum Jazz Festival, guitarist Oh Jin Won, pianist Yoon Ji-hee, bassist Kim Young-hoo and drummer Kim Young-jin, who are members of the second album will perform together. With the sound of the complete Yoo Sun Nam Quintet, which was built through numerous live stages, the repertoire will be various mainly from the second album.
