블랙스트링이라는 이름은, ‘검을 현(玄)’에 ‘거문고 금(琴)’을 써서 ‘현금’이라 풀어 쓸 수 있는 한국의 전통 악기, ‘거문고’의 이름에서 비롯되었다. 또한 “Black String”은 이름 그대로 거문고를 지칭하는 말인 동시에, 동양에서 우주를 상징하는 검은색(black)과 한국 음악이 지닌 선(율)적인 면을 상징하는 스트링(string)이 합쳐져 우주의 소리를 만들어내는 한국 전통악기라는 의미도 지니고 있다.
블랙스트링은 한국 전통음악에 기반을 두고 있으며, 재즈의 즉흥성과 조화를 이루며 현대적이고 독특한 아름다움이 담긴 음악을 선보이고 있다. 거문고 명인 허윤정을 주축으로, 자신만의 독창적인 음악색깔로 주목 받는 기타리스트 오정수, 전방위 대금 연주자 이아람, 그리고 역동성과 섬세함을 겸비한 타악 연주자이자 소리꾼인 황민왕이 함께 하고 있다. 블랙스트링은 2011년 한-영 문화교류 프로그램인 “UK 커넥션” 프로젝트의 일환으로 결성됐으며, 이듬해 2012년 런던 재즈 페스티벌 무대에서 첫 공연을 선보이게 됐다. 팀 결성 이후 블랙스트링은 뉴욕 링컨센터, 워싱턴 케네디센터, 베르린 필하모닉, 덴마크 로스킬데 페스티벌, 런던 재즈페스티벌, 뉴욕 윈터 재즈 페스티벌 및 프랑스, 스페인, 독일 등 전 세계 유수의 공연장과 페스티벌의 초청 투어를 이어오고 있다. 특히 2016년에는 월드뮤직엑스포(WOMEX)의 공식 쇼케이스에 초청되었고, 2018년에는 영국의 저명한 음악전문지 송라인즈(Songlines) 뮤직어워즈에서 한국 음악가 최초로 아시아&퍼시픽 부문을 수상하는 영광을 얻었다. 한편, 제14회 한국대중음악상 재즈&크로스오버 최우수 연주상을 수상하는 등 국내/외에서 그 음악성을 인정받고 있다.
아시아 그룹 최초로 유럽 최대 규모의 재즈 레이블 ACT Music에서 <Mask Dance>에 이어 2019년 2집 앨범 <Karma>를 발표하며 식지 않는 음악의 행보를 이어가고 있는 블랙스트링은 각 연주자의 뛰어난 기량을 바탕으로 지금까지 없던 새로운 사운드를 탐구하는 동시에, 한국 전통 음악이 가진 새로운 가능성을 제시하며 그 특별함과 우수성을 전 세계에 알리고 있다.
Korean traditional music meets jazz improvisation
The name 'Black String' comes from the name 'Geomungo', a Korean traditional musical instrument that can be written as ‘hyunguem’ with Chines letter 'hyun(black, 玄)' and 'guem(Geomungo, 琴).' In addition, “Black String” refers to the Geomungo itself, as well as the black symbolizing the universe in the Orient and the string symbolizing the linear (melody)aspect of Korean music, which means Korean traditional musical instruments that are producing universe sound.
The black string is based on traditional Korean music, and it presents music with modern and unique beauty in harmony with the jazz improvisation. The famous master Geomungo artist Yoon jeong Heo as key member, guitarist Jean Oh, who is attracting attention with his unique musical color, omnivorous Deaguem(traditional Korean wind instrument) player Aram Lee, and percussionist and vocal Minwang Hwang, who combines dynamism and delicacy. The Black String was formed in 2011 as part of the “UK Connection” project, a Korea-English cultural exchange program, and the following year, the first performance was presented at the London Jazz Festival. Since the formation of the team, Black String has been touring as guest at leading venues and festivals around the world including New York Lincoln Center, Washington Kennedy Center, Berlin Philharmonic, Denmark Roskilde Festival, London Jazz Festival, New York Winter Jazz Festival and France, Spain and Germany. In particular, the team was invited to the official showcase of World Music Expo(WOMEX) in 2016, and in 2018 Black String was honored to be the first Korean musician to win the Asia & Pacific category at the famous music magazine Songlines Music Awards. On the other hand, the team has been recognized domestically and internationally by winning the 14th Korean Popular Music Prize Jazz & Crossover Best Performance Award.
Black String, the first Asian group to announce the second album `` Karma '' in 2019 following `` Mask Dance '' at Europe's largest jazz label, ACT Music, has continued their unstoppable musical steps. At the same time, they explores new sounds that are missing, while presenting new possibilities of traditional Korean music to the world.
