두 대의 피아노와 두 대의 드럼, 두 배 더 화려한 가족 밴드
로페즈-누사 라 파밀리아(López-Nussa La Familia)는 쿠바의 재즈 피아니스트 Harold López-Nussa와 그의 아버지인 드러머 Ruy López-Nussa, 삼촌인 피아니스트 Ernan López-Nussa, 그리고 동생인 드러머 Ruy Adrián López-Nussa 등 가족을 중심으로 구성된 밴드다. 밴드의 주축을 맡고 있는 Harold López-Nussa는 2015년 역사적인 미국과 쿠바의 국교정상화 이후 미국에 정식으로 앨범을 발표한 첫 쿠바 아티스트다. 쿠바의 수도인 아바나(Havana)에서 태어난 그는, 8살 때부터 클래식 피아노를 배우기 시작했다. 10살에 쿠바의 피아노 콩쿨에서 우승을 한 Harold는 이탈리아 등 해외에서도 클래식 피아노로 우승을 하는 등 재능을 보였다. 이후 아버지와 삼촌의 영향으로 재즈를 연주하게 됐고, 20대 초반이던 2005년에는 스위스의 몽트뢰 재즈 페스티벌 피아노 콩쿨에서 우승하면서 세계적인 주목을 받았다. 그 뒤 오마라 포르투온도(Omara Portuondo)의 투어 멤버로 3년간 활동하던 Harold는 2008년에 한국을 방문하기도 했다. 비영리 단체 APE(Artists Project Earth)에서 기획한 글로벌 컴필레이션 앨범 시리즈 Rhythms del Mundo의 쿠바 버전 앨범 [Rhythms del Mundo - Cuba](2006)에서는 부에나 비스타 소셜 클럽(Buena Vista Social Club) 출신의 거장들과 함께 녹음에 참여하기도 했다.
로페즈-누사 가족이 처음으로 한 무대에 오른 것은 2006년이었다. 이때는 공연 중간에 특별한 순서로 한 곡 정도만 연주를 했는데, Harold의 아버지인 Ruy의 제안으로 성사됐다. 2013년에는 Harold가 제안하여 로페즈-누사 가족이 프랑스에서 다시 공연을 하게 됐고, 이때부터 로페즈-누사 라 파밀리아는 본격적인 활동에 나서게 된다.
“두 형제와 두 아들, 두 대의 피아노와 두 대의 드럼”이라는 독특한 컨셉의 이 가족 밴드는, 촘촘하게 짜여진 리듬위로 쿠바 특유의 흥겨운 선율이 속도감있게 전개되어 정통 아프로 쿠반(Afro-Cuban) 재즈를 두 배 이상으로 화려하게 선보인다. 여기에 가족은 아니지만 오랫동안 함께 해온 두 연주자가 트럼펫과 베이스 연주를 더하여 빈틈없이 꽉 찬 사운드를 들려준다.

In the past year alone, Harold has performed for sold-out audiences at the Kennedy Center and SFJAZZ, along with the best jazz festivals in the world: Newport, North Sea, Monterey and Detroit. Downbeat Magazine said “López-Nussa’s single-note grace is akin to Herbie Hancock’s, and his two-fisted attacks are as joyous as Chick Corea’s!”
