신선하고 위트있는 새로운 재즈밴드의 등장, 경기남부재즈
지금 여기, 한국 재즈계에선 보기 힘들었던 조합의 밴드가 있다.
바로 임태웅, 김수유, 오원석, 김경민으로 구성된 ‘경기남부재즈’ 라는 팀이다.
이름에서부터 심상치 않은 이 밴드의 짧은 프로필을 아래에서 잠깐 살펴보자.

경기남부 평촌에 고집스럽게 살면서 소리 이수자 “임태웅”을 주축으로
경기남부 의왕에 사는 기타 이수자 “김수유”, 수원이 고향인 베이스 이수자 “오원석”,
처갓집이 시흥인 드럼 이수자 “김경민” 네명의 쿼텟 으로 흥겹고 독특하고 구성진 멋을 가진 경기남부재즈를 알리고자 2018년 3월에 결성되었습니다.”
신선하고 위트 있는 프로필에서부터 알 수 있듯, 이들은 그동안 많은 재즈 연주자들이 정답처럼 택해온 ‘검증된 학습 시스템’을 따르지 않고 다양한 삶의 길을 모색하다 재즈에 안착한 인물들이다. 이들의 음악속에는 록, 팝, 국악, 재즈 등 다양한 요소가 혼재되어 있으며, 사운드의 연출은 자칫 1960년대 사이키델렉을 연상시킨다는 평을 받기도 한다.
2018년 발매한 첫 번째 앨범 [한량]에는 이런 요소들이 고스란히 들어가 있으며, 취해야 세상이 아름답다고 외치는 이들의 외침 속에서 우리는 상투적으로 만나왔던 재즈가 아닌 새로운 형태의 재즈를 만나볼 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 이것은 바로 올해 자라섬재즈에서 ‘경기남부재즈’를 만나봐야 하는 가장 큰 이유가 될 것이다.
Fresh, wit new jazz band emerges
Right now, there is a band of combination that was hard to see in the Korean jazz society. It is a team called 'Southern Gyeonggi Jazz' with members of Taewoong Im, Suyu Kim, Wonseok Oh, and Kyungmin Kim.
Let's take a quick look at the short profile of this band, which is not unusual starting from their name.
“The 'Southern Gyeonggi Jazz' is handed down jazz from the south of(“Nambu”) Gyeonggi province, stubbornly living in Pyeongchon, South Gyeonggi Province, centered around vocal successor “Taewoon Im”, guitar successor “Suyu Kim” living in Uiwang, South Gyeonggi Province, bass successor “Wonseok Oh” whose hometown is Suwon, drum successor “Kyungmin Kim” whose wife’s parent’s home is in Siheung gathered to create a team of 4 people, quartet, playing cheerful, unique and traditionally charming music to promote Jazz from south of Gyeonggi province on March 2018.”
As you can see from the fresh and wit profile, these are the characters who have settled on jazz without seeking the 'conventional learning system' that many jazz players have taken as their answer. Various elements such as rock, pop, traditional music, and jazz are mixed in their music, and the sound is often said to be reminiscent of the psychedelic in the 1960s.
The first album released in 2018, [Hanyang], contains all of these elements, and in the shout of those who say that the world is beautiful to be drunk, we will be able to meet a new form of jazz, rather than the jazz that we have conventionally met. And this will be the biggest reason why you should meet the Southern Gyeonggi Jazz at this year's Jarasum Jazz.
