피아니스트이자 작곡가인 이선지는 지난 10년 동안 참신함을 중시하며 한국 재즈의 진취적 성향을 대변해온 리더 중 한 사람이다. 은근한 관능미를 풍기는 이지적인 작곡, 섬세하고 완급 조절이 좋은 편곡과 연주는 이선지라는 연주자를 더욱 더 독창적인 음악인으로 자리매김 시켜주었다. 또, 그녀는 개성적인 작곡 실력과 특히 눈앞에 그려지는 듯한 회화적 낭만을 음악으로 표현하는데 뛰어남을 보여주며 한국 재즈에서 가장 돋보이는 평가를 받아왔다.
원래 불문학을 전공했던 이선지는 서울예술대학, 동덕여대 대학원을 거쳐 NEW YORK UNIVERSITY 대학원에서 재즈 연주와 작곡 과정을 수료하였다. 그 이후 발표한 6장의 리더작은 각각이 다른 지향을 가지며 모두 평단과 리스너의 의미 있는 주목을 받아왔으며, 2012 자라섬국제재즈콩쿨에서는 BEST CREATIVITY를 수상하였다. 또, 4집 앨범 [THE NIGHT OF THE BORDER]로 2015년 한국대중음악상 최우수재즈앨범상을 수상하기도 하였다.
올해 자라섬 무대에서는 수년 전부터 각종 재즈페스티벌에서 활약해 온 기존 피아노 트리오에 스트링 트리오가 가세한 ‘이선지 체임버 앙상블’로 자라섬의 관객들과 만난다. 이선지 체임버 앙상블은 2018년 [song of April] 앨범을 발매하였으며, 이 앨범은 ‘치밀하고 진지하며 섬세하지만 또 아름다움이라는 넓은 공감의 폭까지 지닌 음반’으로 호평을 받기도 하였다. 이번 자라섬 공연에서는 이 앨범의 수록곡들을 중심으로 하여 다양한 레퍼토리들로 설득력 있고 완성도 높은 매력적인 앙상블을 선보일 예정이다.
한편, 피아니스트로서의 능력뿐 아니라, 작곡가, 프로듀서로서의 탁월한 능력을 인정받으며 자신의 색채감을 확고히 해 온 이선지는 현재 호원대학교 실용음악과 교수로 재직중이기도 하다.
Sunji Lee, who is a pianist and composer, is one of the leaders who has emphasized novelty over the last 10 years and has represented the progressive tendency of Korean jazz. Lee’s subtle sensibility and a delicate and precise arrangement made her to play a role as a more original musician. In addition, she has shown her unique composing skills, especially her artistic romanticism as paintings, getting high appraisal.
Lee, who majored in French literature, graduated from Seoul National University of Arts, Dongduk Women 's University and New York University’s Graduate School with a jazz performance and composition course. Since then, each of the six leader pieces has received a meaningful attention from critics and listeners with different orientations, and won the BEST CREATIVITY at the 2012 Jarasum International Jazz Concurs. She also won the Best Jazz Album of the Korean Pop Music Awards in 2015 with her 4th album [THE NIGHT OF THE BORDER].
In this year's Jarasum stage, Lee will meet with the audience as 'Lee Sunji Chamber Ensemble', a string trio added to the existing piano trio that has been active in various jazz festivals for many years. Lee Sunji Chamber Ensemble released [Song of April] in 2018, and this album was well received as a record with ‘a wide range of sympathy for being dense, serious, delicate but also beautiful’. In this Jarasum performance, the Ensemble will be performing mainly of music from the albums, and various repertoires will be presented with convincing and highly attractive ensemble.
On the other hand, Lee Sunji has been recognized as a composer and producer not only as a pianist but also as a professor in practical music major at Howon University.
