커티스 스타이거스는 1990년대 팝과 록, 재즈를 넘나들며 대중적인 인기를 얻은 보컬리스트이자 색소포니스트다. 1965년 아이다호 주 보이시에서 태어나 어린 시절 클라리넷과 색소폰을 배웠고 십 대에 이미 음악 활동을 시작했다. 재즈, 록, 블루스 등 다양한 밴드에서 활동하다 학교를 졸업한 후 뉴욕으로 건너가 록을 연주했다. 하지만 학창시절 피아니스트 진 해리스(Gene Harris)에게 큰 영향을 받은 그는 재즈에 대한 애정을 놓지 않았다. 커티스 스타이거스는 훗날 ‘Swingin' Down at 10th And Main’라는 진 해리스 헌정 곡을 만들기도 했다.
1991년 발표한 데뷔작 [Curtis Stigers]에 수록된 ‘I Wonder Why’가 빌보드 핫 100 차트에서 영국 5위, 미국 9위에 오르며 인기를 얻었다. 1992년 전 세계를 휩쓴 영화 <보디가드> 사운드트랙에 참여해 ‘(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding’를 노래한 것도 그를 대중적인 성공으로 이끌었다. 1998년에는 영국 싱어송라이터 줄리아 포담(Julia Fordham)과 듀엣으로 부른 ‘Where Does the Time Go?’도 많은 인기를 얻었다.
2000년대 들어 재즈 보컬로 선회한 커티스 스타이거스는, 수많은 재즈 명반을 보유한 콩코드 레이블로 이적하고 2001년 [Baby Plays Around]를 선보였다. 재즈 스탠더드와 찰리 파커(Charlie Parker)의 ‘Parker's Mood’, 래리 골딩스(Larry Goldings)의 곡에 직접 가사를 붙인 ‘Love’ 등을 노래해 재즈 보컬로 성공적인 신고식을 치렀다. 2017년 커티스 스타이거스는 프랭크 시나트라(Frank Sinatra)가 카운트 빅밴드와 함께 했던 1996년 앨범 [Sinatra at the Sands]를 오마주한 라이브 앨범 [One More for the Road]를 발표한다. 이 작품은 ‘Come Fly with Me’, ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ 등 친숙한 선곡과 데니쉬 라디오 빅밴드(Danish Radio Big band)의 풍성한 연주, 그리고 커티스 스타이거스의 호방한 보컬이 더해져 좋은 평가를 받았다.
첫 한국 공연을 펼치는 커티스 스타이거스는 자라섬재즈페스티벌에서 한국 트럼페터 조정현이 이끄는 더재즈앰배서더스 오케스트라(TJAO)와 함께 무대에 오른다. 남성 보컬과 재즈 빅밴드의 트래디셔널한 공연은 국내에서 자주 보기 힘든 무대로, 이들의 협연은 관객들을 자연스럽게 스윙하게 만들 것이다.
더재즈앰배서더스 오케스트라
‘더재즈앰배서더스 오케스트라(The Jazz Ambassadors Orchestra)’는 트럼페터 조정현을 중심으로 결성된 17인조 편성의 재즈 빅밴드이다. 모든 음악 중에서 가장 자유로운 표현이 허용되는 장르이자 고유의 스윙(Swing)감을 동반한 독특한 연주 스타일과 화성적 특징을 지닌 ‘재즈(Jazz)’ 본연의 예술적 가치를 추구하는 동시에 대규모 재즈 앙상블만의 새로운 가능성 찾고자 하는 더재즈앰배서더스는 국내 기업 및 지자체 기획 예술프로그램, 뮤직페스티벌, 국제관악제 등을 통해 관객들을 만나왔으며 Mads Mathias, Anthony Strong과 같은 세계 무대에서 활동하는 보컬리스트들과의 성공적인 협연을 통해서도 그 음악성과 연주력을 증명해왔다. 주요 앙상블을 이루는 트럼펫-트롬본-색소폰 라인의 혼 섹션에서 피아노-베이스-기타-드럼의 리듬섹션에 이르기까지 모두 국내 최고 수준의 연주자들로 구성되어 있으며, 빅밴드 음악의 꽃이라 할 수 있는 정통 스윙재즈를 비롯해 블루스(Blues), 라틴(Latin), 아프로 큐반(Afro-Cuban), 훵크(Funk) 등과 같은 장르 내 보편적인 리듬 스타일은 물론이고, 연주상황에 따라 프렌치 호른 및 튜바, 라틴 퍼커션과 같은 악기를 편성에 추가하여 팝이나 영화음악과 같이 대중들에게 보다 더 친숙하게 어필할 수 있는 레퍼토리까지 다양한 무대를 소화해내고 있다.

Given his string of hit singles, millions of records sold and a 23-year recording career that has touched every continent and nearly every genre, one might expect Curtis Stigers to be either very rich or very tired. But mostly, Stigers is busy. The energetic singer/songwriter/saxophonist regularly barnstorms concert halls, festivals and clubs everywhere from Moscow to Manhattan, accompanied one night by his quartet, another by big band or orchestra. He has released new work nearly every year since he started recording, frequently collaborating with his musical heroes. Along the way, this musician who began his career playing standards in a Boise hotel lobby while moonlighting as drummer in a punk rock band has redefined the constitution of contemporary jazz.
It is his rich singing voice — singular, balletic, at turns mournful and playful — that has landed him on records with the likes of Al Green and Shawn Colvin, in studios with venerated producers like Larry Klein, Danny Kortchmar, and Glen Ballard, and onstage with a plethora of legends, including pop and rock greats Eric Clapton, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Rod Stewart, and The Allman Brothers, and jazz giants Nancy Wilson, Al Jarreau, Gerry Mulligan, Randy and Michael Brecker, Chuck Mangione, Toots Thielmans, Wynton Marsalis, Diana Krall, and many more. The voice, of course, is the thing: hearing Stigers’ confident, nuanced delivery is akin to seeing a celebrated actor lose himself in a role.
That talent was recognized early on by music business impresario Clive Davis, who signed Stigers to a record deal after seeing him in a New York dive. A debut album sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide on the strength of self-penned hit singles like “I Wonder Why,” “You’re All That Matters to Me,” and “Never Saw a Miracle.” A year later, Stigers contributed a cover version of Nick Lowe’s “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love and Understanding” to The Bodyguard Soundtrack, which sold over 40 million copies worldwide. Multiple appearances on The Tonight Show, David Letterman, The Today Show, and countless international TV shows, put Stigers directly in the spotlight of popular culture.
More accolades followed. Stigers’ 2003 release You Inspire Me was The Sunday Times (UK) Jazz Album of the Year; in 2007 BBC Radio 2 awarded him Jazz Artist of the Year. In 2010 and 2013, Deutsche Phono-Akademie named Stigers International Male Jazz Singer of the Year at the Jazz Echo Awards; he received an Emmy nomination for “This Life,” a song he co-wrote and sang for the popular television show Sons of Anarchy. Stigers also recently recorded a duet of Cole Porter’s classic “Well Did You Evah” with Family Guy creator/actor/producer Seth MacFarlane and the John Wilson Orchestra, and he made a cameo appearance in MacFarlane’s movie Ted.
