몽환적인 오르간 사이를 가로지르는 예리한 색소폰, 음악적 쾌감을 뛰어넘는 감동
색소포니스트 막심 벤더는 1982년 룩셈부르크에서 태어났다. 여섯 살 때부터 색소폰을 연주하기 시작하여, 룩셈부르크 음악원을 졸업했고 프랑스 스트라스부르음악원(Conservatoire de Strasbourg), 벨기에 브뤼셀 왕립 음악원(Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles), 독일 쾰른음대(Musikhochschule Köln) 등 유럽 각지에서 음악 교육을 받았다. 팝에서부터 록, 재즈, 클래식에 이르기까지 다양한 음악을 흡수하고 디디 브리지워터(Dee Dee Bridgewater), 조지 듀크(George Duke), 데이비드 비니(David Binney), 도니 맥케슬린(Donny McCaslin), 파스칼 슈마허(Pascal Schumacher) 등과 함께 작업해왔다.
2007년 데뷔 앨범 [Open Range]를 발표한 막심 벤더는 그 해 룩셈부르크에서 엘리 뮤직(Elie Music)상을 수상했다. 이듬해 2008년 프랑스 트랑블랭 재즈 아비뇽(Tremplin Jazz d’Avignon)에서는 작곡상(Prix de la composition)을 받기도 했다. 이후 막심 벤더 퀄텟, 막심 벤더 오케스트라, 막심 벤더 그룹 등을 이끌며 2010년 [Maxime Bender Orchestra Fellowship]과 [Follow the Eye], 2013년 [Path of Decision]을 발표했다.
막심 벤더의 새로운 프로젝트 ‘유니버설 스카이’는 재즈계에서 성공적인 경력을 쌓은 오르가니스트 Jean-Yves Jung, 드러머 Jeff Herr가 함께한다. 막심 벤더는 ‘유니버설 스카이’에 대해 경계와 제한이 없는 우주처럼, 음악을 통해 경계를 없애고 감정을 공유하기 위한 프로젝트라고 설명한다. 몽환적인 오르간 사이를 가로지르는 예리한 색소폰, 그리고 섬세한 드럼 사운드는 음악적 쾌감 이상의 감동을 선사할 것이다.
Tenor and soprano saxophones, Hammond organ, guitar, drums: Maxime Bender and his Universal Sky quartet from Luxembourg have joined CAM JAZZ’s roster of musicians with a lively, energetic, diverse and, above all, intense album.
Bender proves to be a real mine of inspiration, sounds and ideas. Through mostly original tracks, he and his fellow travellers weave a fabric of timbres that turns from intangible and airy like an echo (Holocene) into energetically pure in the intermittent rhythms and contrasts between the sax and the other three instruments (Missing Piece).Bender can also perfectly alternate and balance purposely written ensemble obbligatos with solos and improvisations working as the hub of a track (Infinity, Glow). As tracks are performed, he has the ability to constantly change registers and roles among the quartet-members, throwing open windows onto the most different sonic landscapes designed each time by his sax, Manu Codjia’s guitar and Jean-Yves Jung’s Hammond organ (Fly). And he delivers small poetic masterpieces, such as Dust Of Light, in which melody and harmony merge into a soft cloud pervaded by a sweet, continuous sound. The cohesion of the quartet is absolute: Jérôme Klein on drums weaves ever-changing plots that enhance the perfect work of the ensemble. Universal Sky is a panorama of sounds to be contemplated all by oneself for a while: all time well-spent.
