ECM을 대표하는 차세대 피아노 트리오
독일 레이블 ECM은 키스 자렛 트리오(Keith Jarrett Trio), 마르신 바실레프스키 트리오(Marcin Wasilewski Trio), 보보 스텐손 트리오(Bobo Stenson Trio) 등 현대적이고 서정적인 피아노 트리오가 다수 활동하고 있다. 이 외에도 많은 피아노 트리오 앨범이 발매되는데 콜랑 발롱 트리오는 2011년 [Rruga]로 평단과 관객의 시선을 사로잡아 ECM의 차세대 연주자로 자리 잡았다. [Rruga]는 앰브로서 애킨뮤저리(Ambrose Akinmusire), 그라첸 팔라토(Gretchen Parlato), 커트 엘링(Kurt Elling) 등과 함께 아마존에서 선정하는 올해의 재즈 앨범 3위에 오르기도 했다.
1980년 스위스 로잔에서 태어난 콜랑 발롱은 클래식을 공부하다 14살에 피아니스트 마크 우터(Marc Ueter)를 만나 본격적으로 재즈를 공부하게 되었다. Fridl-Wald Foundation Prize와 몽트뢰 인터내셔널 재즈 피아노 솔로 컴피티션 3위 등을 수상했으며, 2016년 스위스 뮤직 상 후보에 올랐다. 콜랑 발롱은 2014년 연극배우이자 감독으로 활동하고 있는 마틴 짐머만(Martin Zimmerman)의 [Hallo]의 음악을 맡아 호평을 받았으며 2015년 다큐멘터리 <Gossenreiter>에 음악가로 참여하는 등 작곡가로도 주목을 받고 있다.
재즈 연주자로서 콜랑 발롱은 데뷔부터 지금까지 피아노 트리오만을 선보이고 있다. 1999년 베이시스트 Lorenz Beyeler, 드러머 Raphaël Pedroli와 함께 [Les Ombres](2004)를 발표한 것이 처음이다. 2005년 베이시스트 Patrice Moret, 드러머 Samuel Rohrer와 새로운 트리오를 결성해 레이블 hatOLOGY에서 [Ailleurs](2006)을 발표했고, 2011년 ECM으로 이적해 [Rruga]를 선보였다. 이후 드러머가 Samuel Rohrer에서 Julian Sartorius로 바뀌면서 현재의 콜랑 발롱 스타일을 갖춘 [Le Vent](2014), [Danse](2017)를 발표했다.
콜랑 발롱 트리오는 멜로디와 하모니가 조화를 이루는 여느 피아노 트리오와 달리 감각적이고 추상적인 음악을 추구한다. 침묵과 여백, 환경 또한 음악이 된다. 깊어가는 가을 자라섬재즈페스티벌에 모인 관객들과의 호흡은 이들의 음악에 새로운 즉흥성을 선사할 것이다. 관객 역시 그 순간만은 오로지 자라섬과 콜랑 발롱 트리오의 음악에 몸을 맡기길 바란다.

Colin Vallon (born 1980 in Lausanne) has been leading his own bands since 1999. Patrice Moret (born in Aigle in 1972), joined Vallon’s trio in 2004. Pianist and bassist have also honed their musical understanding as members of Albanian singer Elina Duni’s quartet (see the ECM album Matanë Malit),where improvisation frequently takes place outside of jazz’s frame of reference. Vallon has often said that vocalists have influenced him more than other pianists. Disinterested in technical display, he savours the sound and texture of each resonant chord, each carefully placed note, as the trio’s searching improvisations move forward.
