화려하고 부드러운 절정의 기교, 검은 장갑을 낀 베이스 마스터
‘검은 장갑을 끼고 연주하는 베이시스트’, 에티엔 음바페는 사실 그리 낯익은 이름은 아니지만, 재즈팬이라면 한 번쯤 그의 음악을 접해보았을 연주자다. 2005년 누엔 레 밴드(Nguyên Lê Band)와 2008년 레이 레마 트리오(Ray Lema Trio)로 자라섬재즈페스티벌 무대에 섰고, 2014년 John McLaughlin & The 4th Dimension으로 한국 팬들을 만났으며, 조 자비눌(Joe Zawinul) 과 존 맥러플린의 음반에도 각각 참여한 바 있기 때문이다.
1964년 카메룬 두알라에서 태어난 에티엔 음바페는 1978년 프랑스로 이주해 클래식 기타와 콘트라베이스를 전공했다. 클래식을 공부하면서 재즈, 아프리카 음악, 훵크, 록 등 다양한 장르를 섭렵하고 자신만의 음악 세계를 구축했다. 1980년대 Rido Bayonne 오케스트라와 오케스트라 내셔널 드 재즈(Orchestre National de Jazz)의 베이시스트로 활동하며 실력을 인정받았다. 1980~90년대 기타리스트 누엔 레와 퓨전 재즈 밴드 울트라마린(Ultramarine)을 결성해 앨범 [Dé](1989), [E Si Mala](1992)을 발표했다. 2000년 조 자비눌 신디케이트에 참여하며 퓨전 베이시스트로 명성을 떨쳤고, 2010년부터 지금까지 John McLaughlin & The 4th Dimension의 멤버로 활약하고 있다.
재즈-록, 퓨전 전문 레이블 앱스트랙트 로직스(Abstract Logix)에서 활동해온 음바페는 2012년 기타리스트 지미 헤링(Jimmy Herring)의 [Subject To Change Without Notice]에 참여한 것을 계기로 이듬해 지미 헤링을 비롯해 기타리스트 웨인 크란츠(Wayne Krantz)와 마이클 랜도우(Michael Landau), 드러머 게리 노박(Gary Novak)과 함께 더 링어스(The Ringers)를 결성했다. 더 링어스는 록, 훵크, 재즈, 블루스, 아프리카 음악 등 다섯 장르를 가로지르는 수퍼 세션 밴드로 화제가 됐다.
에티엔 음바페는 퓨전 뿐 아니라 다양한 스타일의 솔로 활동을 펼치며 [Misiya](2004), [Su La Take](2008), [Pater Noster](2013), [How Near How Far](2016) 등을 선보여 왔다. 자라섬재즈페스티벌에서는 최근작 [How Near How Far]를 중심으로 피아니스트 Christophe Cravéro, 기타리스트 Anthony Jambon, 트럼페터 Alexandre Hérichon, 테너 색소폰 Balthazar Naturel, 바이올리니스트 Clément Janinet, 드러머 Edwin Dharil Denguemo가 함께 한다. “음악을 통해 사람들에게 기쁨과 이해를 선사할 것”이라는 그는, 더 프로펫츠 멤버들과 함께 관객과 소통하는 풍성하고 다채로운 무대를 선보일 예정이다.
With a rich, singing tone and an unerring gift for melody, bassist Etienne Mbappé imparts even the most demanding musical contexts with a grace, warmth, and humanity that transcends boundaries, genres, and languages. His gifts have been put to use as a member of John McLaughlin’s 4th Dimension and the Ringers (with Jimmy Herring, Wayne Krantz, Michael Landau, and Gary Novak), along sideman appearances with Joe Zawinul, Manu Dibango, Robben Ford, Salif Keita, Ray Charles, Steps Ahead, and saxophonist Bill Evans. Now audiences can experience Mbappé's own music via How Near How Far (available on DATE through Abstract Logix), his forth solo album and the first to focus on his instrumental music.
How Near How Far also marks the debut of Mbappé's new band the Prophets – featuring Christophe Cravéro (acoustic and electric piano), Anthony Jambon (guitars), Clément Janinet (violin), Arno de Casanove (trumpet, flugelhorn), Hervé Gourdikian (tenor saxophone), and Nicholas Viccaro (drums, percussion). With the unusual trumpet/tenor/violin frontline leading the way, the Prophets explore eleven Mbappé originals, which touch on a number of international traditions while bridging cultural divides via deft musicianship and a thoughtful, conversational improvisational approach. “My music is influenced by places I have traveled, people I meet, colors I see, flavors that I taste, fun that I’ve had, and, sometimes, the pain that I feel,” Mbappé explains. “We live in a complex world today. I want nothing more than to bring that joy and understanding to people through music.”
