탱고와 재즈의 매혹적인 만남
음악을 사랑하는 이들에게 아르헨티나는 탱고의 나라다. 탱고는 자연스레 아스토르 피아졸라(Astor Piazzolla)를 떠올리게 한다. 자라섬재즈페스티벌에 내한하는 파블로 지글러는 1978년 피아졸라의 누에보 탱고 퀸텟에 합류해 피아졸라가 심장병으로 활동을 중단한 1989년까지 함께 한 피아니스트다. 그래서 평론가들은 파블로 지글러를 두고 ‘피아졸라 사후 현대 탱고를 계승하는 연주자’라고 평가하기도 한다.
파블로 지글러는 1944년 아르헨티나의 수도 부에노스아이레스에서 태어났다. 일찍부터 음악에 재능을 보여 14세부터 재즈 밴드에서 연주하고 18세에는 피아노 솔로 공연을 펼쳤다. 클래식과 탱고는 물론 재즈에 많은 관심을 가지고 있어 누에보 탱고 퀸텟으로 활동하면서도 비브라폰 연주자 게리 버튼(Gary Burton) 등 재즈 연주자들과 꾸준히 교류했다. 현재 그가 뉴올리언즈 명예시민이라는 점도 오랜 재즈 사랑을 느낄 수 있게 한다. 피아졸라가 밴드를 해체한 후 1990년 파블로 지글러는 자신이 이끄는 누에보 탱고 퀄텟을 결성하면서 재즈의 즉흥성이 강조된 음악을 선보이기 시작했다.
파블로 지글러는 기타리스트 Quique Sinesi의 듀오에 반도네온 연주자 Walter Castro가 게스트로 참여한 2003년 앨범 [Bajo Cero]에서 탱고와 재즈가 완벽한 조화를 이뤘다는 평가를 받았다. 이 앨범은 라틴 그래미 어워드 베스트 탱고 앨범을 수상했다. 자라섬재즈페스티벌에서 만나게 될 세 연주자는 2007년 [Buenos Aires Report], 2015년 [Desperate Dance]를 통해 꾸준히 듀오와 트리오를 넘나드는 재즈 탱고의 매력을 선보이는 중이다. 시간이 흘러 재즈 탱고의 장인(匠人)이 된 파블로 지글러는 2017년 발매한 [Jazz Tango]로 2018 그래미 어워드 베스트 라틴 재즈 앨범을 수상하기에 이른다. 또한 올해는 생애 첫 솔로 앨범 [Solo Pablo Ziegler]를 통해 클래식, 재즈, 탱고에 이르는 음악적 스펙트럼을 펼쳐낼 예정이다.
‘탱고와 재즈의 매혹적인 만남’이라는 타이틀은 파블로 지글러를 설명하기에 너무 식상하게 느껴지지만 그처럼 두 음악의 절묘한 조화를 이끌어내는 연주자는 없을 것이다. 자라섬에서는 우수에 찬 가을 밤, 파블로 지글러 트리오가 선사하는 재즈 탱고가 아름답게 관객들의 마음을 파고들 것이다.

For decades, Buenos Aires-born, GRAMMY-winning pianist, composer and arranger Pablo Ziegler has been one of the most important figures in Argentine New Tango, the vibrant musical hybrid of traditional tango, American jazz, and European art music. After performing in tango grand-maestro Astor Piazzolla’s legendary quintet for over a decade, and appearing on iconic Piazzolla recordings including Tango: Zero Hour, La Camorra and Central Park Concert, Ziegler has led his own groups for over 25 years, refining and reimagining the bounds of the modern tango tradition.
Recent seasons have seen Ziegler performing at major venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Muziekgebouw, Verbier Festival, Ravinia Festival SFJAZZ, Montreal Jazz Festival, the Ottawa International Jazz Fest, Tokyo Jazz Festival, La Jolla SummerFest, Laguna Beach Music Festival, Blue Note, Birdland and many others. Ziegler also gives Masterclasses at music academy such as Berklee School of Music, New England Conservatory, Eastman School of Music.
Ziegler’s most recent release, 2017's Jazz Tango won the 60th GRAMMY Award for Best Latin Jazz Album with his trio, Hector Del Curto and Claudio Ragazzi. 2013's the LATIN GRAMMY-nominated Amsterdam Meets New Tango, sees his quartet paired with the Netherlands’ Metropole Orkest, playing his most famous compositions re-arranged for jazz orchestra. 2016 and 2013 also saw the release of Ziegler's protege and saxophonist Julio Botti's both LATIN GRAMMY-nominated Sax to Tango and Tango Nostalgias with Ziegler, Piazzolla and Cobian's composition. In 2011, Ziegler’s work as music director, arranger and pianist for bass-baritone opera star Erwin Schrott earned an Echo Klassik Award for the album Rojotango. Ziegler’s 2005 release, Bajo Cero, won the LATIN Grammy for Best Tango Album, and in 2008, his album Buenos Aires Report was nominated for the same honor. Ziegler releases his first Solo Piano album by Steinway and Sons in 2018.
Quique Sinesi is considered one of the most important guitarists in Argentina for his personal style. His music is based in elements of Tango and Folklore from his country and rhythms from “Rio de la Plata” like Candombe, incorporating elements of jazz, improvisation, classic and world music, using 7 strings Spanish Guitar, Piccolo, Acoustic and Charango.
Walter Castro started studying bandoneon with professor Domingo Mattio, later he continued with professors Julio Pane and Nestor Marconi. In 1995 he participates in the quintet for singer Adriana Varela. In the same year he joins “Pablo Ziegler´s Quintet for New Tango”. Since 2000 Quique Sinesi plays with Pablo Ziegler and Walter Castro, a highly acclaimed format that toured all over Europe and in Asia.
