카리스마 넘치는 재즈 피아노의 거장
칼라 블레이는 지난 반세기 동안 재즈계에서 가장 독창적이고 독보적인 빅밴드 리더이자 작곡가, 피아니스트 가운데 한 명으로 손꼽힌다. 1936년 캘리포니아 주 오클랜드에서 태어난 그녀는 어린 시절 교회 음악가인 아버지로부터 피아노와 오르간을 배웠다. 재즈에 관심을 갖게 되자 17살이 되던 해 뉴욕으로 이주해 클럽 버드랜드에서 담배를 팔며 독학으로 재즈를 익혔다.
1957년 칼라 블레이의 실력을 눈여겨보던 캐나다 출신 피아니스트 폴 블레이(Paul Bley)와 결혼해 ‘칼라 블레이’가 되었다. 폴 블레이는 그녀의 작곡 능력을 높이 평가했다. 1964년에는 칼라 블레이의 곡만을 연주한 앨범 [Barrage]를 녹음하기도 했다. 그리고 피아니스트 조지 러셀(George Russell), 피아니스트 지미 쥐프리(Jimmy Giuffre) 등이 그녀의 곡을 연주하며 작곡가로 인정받기 시작했다. 칼라 블레이는 1964년 뉴욕에서 가장 혁신적인 음악가들의 모임인 ‘재즈 작곡가 길드’의 멤버가 되었다.
폴 블레이와 헤어진 그녀는 1965년 오스트리아 출신 트럼페터 마이클 맨틀러(Michael Mantler)와 결혼했다. 마이클 맨틀러와 재즈 컴포저스 오케스트라(JCOA)를 결성해 1968년부터 71년까지 대작 오페라 <Escalator Cover the Hill>을 완성해냈다. 이 작품은 프랑스 재즈디스크 오스카상을 수상했고 칼라 블레이는 1972년 구겐하임 펠로우십에 선정되었다. 작곡가뿐 아니라, 1974년 데뷔 앨범 [Tropic Appetites]부터 2009년 발표한 [Carla's Christmas Carols]까지 다양한 편성과 스타일을 넘나들며 재즈 역사에서 가장 중요한 빅밴드(라지 앙상블) 리더 중 한 명으로 기록되었다.
올해 자라섬재즈페스티벌에서 만나게 될 칼라 블레이 트리오는, 오랜 인연 끝에 인생의 동반자가 된 베이시스트 Steve Swallow와 1980년대부터 함께 해온 색소포니스트 Andy Sheppard가 만들어내는 조금은 특별한 편성이다. 진취적이고 담대한 빅밴드와는 달리 칼라 블레이 트리오는 섬세하면서도 정형화되지 않은 멜로디와 즉흥연주, 그리고 세 사람의 농밀한 인터플레이를 선보인다. 1994년 첫 트리오 앨범 [Songs with Legs]를 발표했으며, 2013년 [Trios]와 2016년 [Andando el Tiempo]를 발표하며 최근 들어 트리오 활동에 집중하고 있다.
2002년 첫 번째 내한을 끝으로 한국에서 만나볼 수 없었던 칼라 블레이는 올해로 83세. 아마도 올해 자라섬재즈페스티벌이 마지막 내한이 될 것 같다. 앨범에는 모두 담을 수 없는 그녀의 카리스마와 아름다움을 직접 목격할 수 있는, 어쩌면 마지막 기회일 것이다.
Carla Bley was born in Oakland, California in 1936. She began writing music after meeting pianist Paul Bley. When saxophonist Ornette Coleman came on the scene in the mid-fifties, Paul Bley immediately hired him and Carla Bley was exposed nightly to free playing, a powerful influence that was to affect her writing for many years. At the end of the sixties Gary Burton recorded Carla’s first extended work, A Genuine Tong Funeral. Shortly after, Charlie Haden asked her to arrange and write for The Liberation Music Orchestra. Playing duets with guitarist Steve Swallow, which started as recreation, soon turned professional and Swallow and Bley toured and recorded as a duo regularly. They now live in contented isolation, in the mountains of upstate New York. Bandleader and composer Andy Sheppard is one of Europe’s leading saxophonists, playing and writing for settings from solo to big band and chamber orchestra.
Their latest album “Andando el Tiempo” features new music of wide emotional compass by Carla Bley, and underlines her originality and resourcefulness as a jazz composer. “Saints Alive!” sets up animated conversations between the participants with striking statements from Steve Swallow’s bass guitar and Andy Sheppard’s soprano sax. The stately “Naked Bridges/Diving Brides” draws inspiration from Mendelssohn and the poetry of Paul Haines. And the powerful three part title composition – which addresses the trials and tribulations of recovery from addiction - moves through sorrow to hopefulness and joy. The trio with Sheppard and Swallow has been an ideal vehicle for Carla’s writing for more than 20 years and also provides one of the best contexts for her unique piano playing.
