재즈의 어법을 깬 대담한 재즈 트리오
슈넬라톨라마이어는 스위스 출신 베이시스트 Andi Schnellmann, 기타리스트 Manuel Troller, 드러머 David Meier가 각자 자신의 성(Schneller + toller + meier)을 조합해 만든 재즈 트리오다. 특별하지 않은 작명법이지만 조합어 ‘Schnellertollermeier’가 주는 인상은 그들의 음악만큼이나 강렬하다.
공학도 같은 이미지를 풍기는 슈넬라톨라마이어의 세 연주자는 2009년 [Holz], 2010년 [Zorn einen ehmer üttert stem!!] 등을 발표하며 이름을 알리기 시작했다. 2015년 프로그레시브 록과 재즈 록 앨범을 주력으로 발매하는 큐니폼(Cuneiform) 레코드로 이적, 새 앨범 [X]를 발표해 호평을 받았다. 후속작으로 선보인 2017년 앨범 [Rights]로 연달아 호평을 받으며 ‘거침없는 재즈 파워 트리오(The Brutal-Jazz Power Trio)’라는 수식어처럼 저력을 과시했다.
기타-베이스-드럼으로 이루어진 밴드는 주로 기타 트리오 형태를 띠지만 슈넬라톨라마이어는 기존 재즈 트리오의 형식과 어법을 과감하게 깨뜨린다. 프로그레시브 록, 메탈, 전자음악 등 다양한 음악을 재즈의 즉흥연주로 확장해가는 것이다. 그 음악은 단조로운 동시에 매우 정교하여 관객들을 금방 몰입시킨다. 자라섬재즈페스티벌에서는 유럽을 넘어 국제적인 명성을 얻고 있는 이들을 스위스 포커스를 통해 만날 수 있다.
Schnellertollermeier play music without compromises. Ranging from modern composition, minimal music and improv to brute rock music, their style defies genre boundaries with an instrumental power that lets heart beat the head easily. The idea of a band that sounds like one organism can be perceived in a unified energy – a music containing as much explosive force as beauty and depth.
Schnellertollermeier still has its original line-up: Andi Schnellmann (bass), Manuel Troller (guitar) and David Meier (drums). These three musicians attended jazz schools in Switzerland and Scandinavia and have been working together as a band for more than ten years. And although they today live in different towns in Switzerland, their collaboration is even more intense than in their early years. After Holz (2008) and Zorn einen ehmer üttert stem!! (2010) it was above all their third album, X (2015), their first release on Cuneiform, that took the band onto a different level, both in compositional and career terms. Whereas Schnellertollermeier had until then played some 20 concerts per year, today it’s 40.
Their third album „X“ (Cuneiform Records, US) received enthusiastic critics from all over the world and made it into the list of the 12 best albums of 2015 in US-Wall Street Journal among Björk, Kendrick Lamar, Courtney Barnett and Battles.
The fourth album “RIGHTS” is out on 6th of October 2017 via Cuneiform Records. International tours and festival appearances since 2010 include USA, England, Scotland, Ireland, Russia, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Finland, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland.
