지적이고 위트있는 연주를 선보이는 프랑스 재즈 트리오
EYM 트리오는 프랑스 출신인 피아니스트 Elie Dufour, 베이시스트 Yann Phayphet, 드러머 Marc Michel이 2010년 결성한 피아노 트리오다. 결성 당시 스무 살을 갓 넘긴 젊은 연주자들이었지만, 2011년 운 도아 데 재즈 축제(Un doua de Jazz Festival)에 서며 주목을 받았다. 2015년에는 생 제르멩 데 재즈 축제(Festival Jazz in Saint Germain des Prés)에서 영 탤런트 상을 수상했다.
Elie Dufour는 어릴 때부터 즉흥연주에 관심을 가져 14살에 재즈 피아노를 연주하기 시작했다. 이후 안달루시아와 라틴 아메리카 여행을 계기로 플라멩코, 아프로-쿠반 등 월드뮤직과 재즈를 접목하는데 관심을 가져왔다. Yann Phayphet은 공학을 전공했지만 음악으로 전향해 프랑스의 유명 베이시스트 제롬 레가드(Jérôme Regard)를 사사했다. 더블 베이스와 일렉트릭 베이스를 자유자재로 다루며 힙합, 퓨전, 모던 재즈 등 다양한 장르의 밴드에서 활동하고 있다. Marc Michel은 포크 기타리스트인 아버지의 영향을 받아 일찍부터 클래식 퍼커션, 작곡과 체임버 뮤직 등에 대한 교육을 받았다. 기타, 피아노, 퍼커션 등 여러 악기를 다루며 밴드의 색깔을 만들어나가는 드러머이기도 하다.
EYM 트리오는 2013년 첫 앨범 [Genesi]과 2016년 [Khamsin]을 발표했으며, 2018년 새 앨범 [Sādhana]를 발표했다. 클래식과 월드뮤직 등 다양한 음악을 바탕으로 한 이국적인 스타일과 특유의 지적이고 위트 있는 연주는 EYM 트리오를 특별하게 만든다. 자라섬재즈페스티벌에서는 이처럼 국내에 잘 알려지지 않은 매력적인 재즈 트리오를 발견하는 순간이 자주 찾아온다. EYM 트리오가 그 중 하나일 것이다.
Today well established on the international jazz scene, France based EYM Trio continues its path playing an acoustic jazz on a conceptual foundation from variable geometry. Piano player Elie Dufour, Yann Phayphet on bass and drummer Marc Michel are the central members of the band since the very beginning. They explore the world physically through band tours, then musically through the musicians they invite to collaborate.
In 2013, they've recorded in trio a first album Genesi. They won three huge competitions (La Défense, Jazz à Saint-Germain-des-Près and Getxo International Jazz Competition) in Europe. 2016, they invite the Egyptian oud player Mohamed Abozekry and gypsy accordion player Marian Badoï to record new album Khamsin. They signed to Kollision Prod and Melmax Music. They often perform in India and compose a third album colored by new influences: Sādhana, with special guests Mirande Shah, singer from Mumbai, and Gilad Hekselman on guitar.
After more than 250 concerts all over the world (Tokyo Jazz Festival, Kolkata Jazz Festival, Jazz à Vienne...), EYM is constantly experimenting on stage. In character and creation, EYM Trio imbibes the rhythmic influences of Jazz masters throughout history, the genius of the historic jazz figures deeply inspires them. Music for heart and soul, they find inspirations as well in many different cultures around the world. There is great intentional diversity in their improvisations, thus making their music aesthetically pleasing and inviting. New album Sādhana will be released on September 21, 2018.
