흔히 트럼펫이라는 악기는 남성 연주자들의 전유물처럼 인식되는 경향이 있으나 프랑스 출신의 트럼펫 연주자 에렐 베송은 그러한 편견을 보기 좋게 깨줄 만큼 뛰어난 실력과 음악성을 겸비하고 있다. 4살 때부터 트럼펫을 배우기 시작한 에렐 베송은 이후 윈튼 마살리스(Wynton Marsalis)와 글렌 패리스(Glenn Ferris) 등으로부터 사사한 후 2008년 프랑스의 라 데팡스 재즈 콩쿠르에서 우승했고, 소규모 앙상블과 오케스트라 등 다양한 활동은 물론 작곡에도 뛰어난 재능을 보이고 있다. 우리에게는 익숙지 않은 이름일 수도 있으나, 재즈 보컬리스트 나윤선이 YSN 5tet을 결성하여 유럽에서 활동할 당시 함께 연주했으며, 2001년에 발표된 나윤선의 앨범 <Reflet>에 참여하기도 했다. 서정적인 멜로디와 부드럽고 긴 호흡, 그리고 독특한 리듬감이 강조된 에렐 베송의 음악은 일반적인 재즈 트럼펫과는 다른 그녀만의 음악 세계를 구분 짓는 강점이다. 에렐 베송은 지난 2015년부터 프랑스 3대 재즈 페스티벌 가운데 하나인 재즈술레포미에(Jazz sous les Pommiers)의 레지던스 아티스트로 선정됐고, 올해 재즈술레포미에 개막공연에서는 나윤선과 함께 무대에 올라 노르망디 오케스트라(Orchestre Régional de Normandie)와 협연했다. ‘2015-2016 한-불 상호교류의 해’를 기념하기 위하여 자라섬국제재즈페스티벌과 아티스트 교류 행사의 일환으로 마련된 이 무대는 어느덧 프랑스를 대표하는 트럼펫 연주자로 성장한 에렐 베송의 위상을 보여주었다. 브라질의 기타리스트 넬슨 베라스(Nelson Veras)와 듀오 앨범 <Prélude>(2014)를 발표하여 트럼펫과 어쿠스틱 기타라는 흔치 않은 조합으로 아름다운 연주를 들려주었던 에렐 베송은, 올해 스웨덴의 보컬리스트 이사벨 소오링(Isabel Sörling)과 함께 퀄텟을 구성하여 새 앨범 <Radio One>을 발표했다. 화려하고 강렬한 리듬이 강조된 에렐 베송의 리더작 레파토리를 이젠 자라섬에서 만나볼 차례이다.

2016 follows on as a natural continuation of 2015 which was an exceptional year for Airelle Besson : Awarded twice, as Best French Musician of the Year by the French Django Reinhardt Jazz Award Academy & as Jazz Revelation of the Year at the French Jazz award ceremony ‘Les Victoires du Jazz’. At the 2015 festival ‘Jazz sous les Pommiers’ in Coutances, where she is artist in residence for 3 years, Airelle caught the public’s attention with her brand new project: a quartet with Isabel Sörling on vocals, Benjamin Moussay on piano, fender Rhodes & bass synth and Fabrice Moreau on drums. Their new album <Radio One> was released in May 2016 on the French label Naïve. Concerts in France and worldwide will follow the release.

Airelle has an impressive track-record. She trained with Wynton Marsalis, Pierre Gillet and Kato Havas (Yehudi Menuhin‘s disciple) in Oxford, graduated from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and was winner of the international jazz competition ‘Paris La Défense’ in 2008.

This multi-talented trumpet player shines on the European scene with her projects (the Airelle Besson Quartet and duo with Nelson Veras), as a much sought after side woman (with François Jeanneau, Riccardo Del Fra, Didier Levallet, Laurent Cugny and many more) and as a composer/arranger (Metronomy, Orchestre National de Lyon). She has performed with Charlie Haden and Carla Bley, Michel Portal, Youn Sun Nah, Philip Catherine, Billy Hart, Rhoda Scott, Daniel Humair, Magic Malik, Baptiste Trotignon, Henry Texier and so on.
