The13th JARASUM INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

대금 연주자 이아람과 플루트 연주자 조스 미에니엘의 듀오 프로젝트 ‘우드 & 스틸’은 대금과 플루트라는 두 선율 악기의 만남, 한국과 유럽 아티스트의 만남이라는 독특함이 담긴 앙상블이다. 두 악기 모두 음을 하나씩 짚어나가는 선율 악기라는 것과 주로 높은 음역을 담당하고 있다는 공통점을 가지고 있는데, 이는 자칫 단점이 될 수도 있다. 그러나 각 나라의 전통음악에 대한 깊은 이해와 뛰어난 음악성, 그리고 서로의 음악에 대한 포용과 이해가 바탕이 된 ‘우드 & 스틸’은 “독특한 민족 선율과 악기 고유의 톤으로 상상력의 한계를 넓혔다”는 호평을 받았다. 이아람은 대금을 비롯하여 소금, 단소, 퉁소, 양금 등 다양한 한국 전통악기를 연주할 수 있고 작곡까지 가능한 다재다능한 연주자로, 전통음악을 비롯해서 여러 장르의 음악을 모두 커버할 수 있는 실력을 겸비했다.

조스 미에니엘은 프랑스 출신의 플루트 연주자로, 클래식과 재즈를 전공하였으나 중간에 잠시 요리사로도 활동한 바 있는 독특한 이력을 가지고 있다. 베이스, 알토, 소프라노 플루트를 두루 연주하며, 플루트 외에도 색소폰, 칼림바 등 여러 악기와 사운드 이펙터를 활용하여 미니멀리즘 음악을 만들어내는 솔로 프로젝트도 진행하고 있다. 또한 각 나라의 전통악기 연주자들과 함께 월드뮤직을 연주하는 프로젝트 바벨(Babel), 기타와 신서사이저, 드럼과 함께 포스트모던 스타일의 음악을 연주하는 프로젝트 틸트(Tilt) 등 다양한 프로젝트로 실험적인 음악을 선보이고 있다. ‘우드 & 스틸’은 이번 자라섬국제재즈페스티벌에서 전통 타악기 연주자 황민왕이 참여하여 보다 더 화려하고 견고해진 앙상블로 관객과 만날 예정이다.

Joce Mienniel is a French flutist who studied classical music. He is also a composer, arranger, and orchestrator. He is also good at using electronic effects while playing music. In June 2004, he obtained his diploma at the Paris National Superior Music Conservatory with the first prize. He is one of the soloists of the French National Jazz Orchestra, directed by Daniel Yvinec since 2009. Joce Mienniel is an artist with a lot of influences from jazz, pop, contemporary music to electronic and world music.

Daegeum and Yanggeum player Aram Lee based his play on Korean traditional music. He also has a talent for composing and is able to cover wide ranges of music from traditional music to modern. Now he performs as a member of ‘Blackstring’ that plays improvised music based on traditional sound. He is also a leader of ‘NaMu’, Korean traditional music ensemble since 2015.

The ‘Wood & Stee’l is a duo project with two melodic instruments, daegeum and flute. In 2014, ‘Wood & Steel’ officially debuted in France and the following year, 2015, they participated in Yeowoorak Festival from National Theater of Korea in Seoul, South Korea. Especially for 2016 Jarasum International Jazz Festival, Ajaeng & Janggu player Min Wang Hwang will join for the stage and this new ‘Wood & Steel’ will show fascinating ensemble to many jazz fans.
