피아니스트 부게 베셀토프트는 1990년대부터 노르웨이 재즈씬에 혁신을 몰고 온 선구적인 아티스트이다. 그가 보여준 다양한 시도와 스타일은 북유럽 전역에 퓨처재즈(Future Jazz) 혹은 뉴재즈(Nu-Jazz)로 불리는 하나의 사조를 만들어내는데 일조했다. 깊이 있는 진지한 재즈 피아노의 세계를 보여주었던 솔로 활동을 비롯해서, 보컬리스트 시젤 엔드레센(Sidsel Endresen)과 듀오로 독특한 보컬 음악을 선보이기도 했고, 전설적인 퓨전재즈 드러머 빌리 코햄(Billy Cobham)과 함께 음반을 녹음하고 투어를 다녔으며, 뉴 컨셉션 오브 재즈라는 자신의 밴드를 결성하여 이름만큼이나 새로운 음악을 세상에 선보이는 등 부게 베셀토프트의 이 모든 활동이 1990년대에 이루어졌다. 특히 1995년에 활동을 시작한 뉴 컨셉션 오브 재즈는 전자악기들을 적극 활용하여 라이브 일렉트로닉 사운드를 접목한, 그야말로 새로운 콘셉트의 재즈를 선보였다. 부게 베셀토프트는 뉴 컨셉션 오브 재즈 활동을 시작으로 2000년대에 들어서는 라이브 일렉트로닉 아티스트인 헨릭 슈바르츠(Henrik Schwarz)와 함께 듀오로 일렉트로닉 음반 <Wesseltoft Schwarz Duo>를 발표하기도 했으며, DJ 부게(DJ Bugge)라는 이름으로 클럽에서 활동을 하기도 했다. 하우스, 라운지, 앰비언트 등 다양한 전자음악 스타일을 적극 도입했던 그의 뉴 컨셉션 오브 재즈는 2004년에 다섯 번째 앨범 <Film Ing>를 마지막으로 해체됐다. 그러나 밴드의 첫 앨범 발표 20주년을 맞아 노르웨이 출신의 젊은 여성 연주자 네 명과 함께 뉴 컨셉션 오브 재즈 투어를 다시 시작한 부게 베셀토프트는, 그의 오랜 경험과 아이디어를 바탕으로 젊은 뮤지션들과 시너지를 일으켜, 보다 더 세련되고 그루브 넘치는 2016년 버전의 새로운 콘셉트를 보여줄 예정이다.

After a 10 years break Bugge Wesseltoft restarts his iconic New Conception of Jazz in connection with the bands and record labels Jazzland’s 20 year anniversary. The original formation hitting of back in 1996 really created a new and fresh boost for European jazz music together with artists like Erik Truffaz and Nils Petter Molvaer. Key element and concept of the group were the blend of electronic club music and live jazz. New Conception of Jazz became the definition and leading figure of Electronic Jazz. The band took a break after 10 years of worldwide touring, 400 concerts and 5 albums, <New Conception of Jazz>(1996), <Sharing>(1998), <Moving>(2001), <Live>(2003), <Filming>(2004).

Now, hitting 2016 it’s time for a fresh start - kicking off Jazzland Recordings and the groups 20 year anniversary, with Norway’s most promising new musicians. The band will perform both new and old material featuring New Conception of Jazz hit like ‘You Might Say’, originally featuring Sidsel Endresen, ‘Existence’ and ‘Change’. Jazzland Recordings was, started by Bugge in 1996, also celebrating 20 years in 2016. One hundred releases, one million sold copies of some of the best Norwegian jazz. Atomic, Sidsel Endresen, Beady Belle, Torun Eriksen, Håkon Kornstad, Dhafer Youssef, Eivind Aarset, Punktsessions, Ola Kvernberg, Come Shine Mopti, Motif, New Conception of Jazz and many others. Bugge Wesseltoft and Jazzland Recordings are enormously excited to get out there and present all the amazing artists and musicians featured by Jazzland in 2016.
