카에타누 벨로주가 드디어 한국을 찾는다. 음악가를 넘어 예술가라 불리는, 브라질 대중문화 전체에 영향을 준 위대한 존재인 그는 1967년 첫 앨범을 발표한 뒤로 지금까지 활발히 활동하고 있다. 살아있는 역사이자 브라질 음악의 중심인 그가 남긴 여파는 비단 어느 한순간에 그치는 것이 아니다. 물론 벨로주를 이야기할 때 몇 가지 중심이 되는 것들이 있고, 그 중 가장 먼저 등장하는 것은 트로피칼리아 운동이 일어났던 순간이다. 1960년대에 음악 활동을 시작했던 그는 어릴 적 자신이 습득했던 보사노바 음악과 브라질 음악에 락앤롤, 아방가르드 등 브라질 밖에 있는 다양한 장르를 가져왔다. 당시 군부독재 상태였던 브라질에 가져온 새로운 바람은 단지 대중음악만 세련되게 바꿔놓은 데서 그치지 않았다. 이는 문화 부흥 운동으로 이어지며 다른 형태의 예술도 발전시키는가 하면 동시에 예술가들의 사회 비판적인 표현도 점차 늘어나기 시작했다. 이 운동 전후로 브라질 전체가 바뀌었다고 할 만큼 트로피칼리아 운동은 브라질 역사에 있어서 가장 중요한 사건 중 하나이며, 벨로주는 그 중심에 서 있었다. 여러 차례 감금과 투옥 끝에 국외로 추방당하여 영국에서 2년 간 망명생활을 하기도 했다. 1972년 브라질로 돌아온 그는 더욱 본격적인 음악활동을 이어갔고 해외에서도 그를 주목하기 시작했다. 유럽과 아프리카의 관심에 이어 그는 곧 북미에서도 사랑을 받았다. 벨로주의 음악은 탱고, 삼바, 보사노바 등 남미의 리듬을 기반으로, 브라질을 식민 통치했던 포르투갈의 파두와 아프리카의 레게 리듬까지 녹여내어 전세계의 사랑을 받는 것이다. 게다가 트로피칼리아 운동에서 보여준, 현학적인 시적 표현에 서구 락음악의 저항정신과 브라질 토속음악을 함께 조화시킨 그의 예술적 성취는 전세계 음악인의 존경을 받기에 충분했다. 2016 리우 올림픽 개막식에서 공연을 선보이기도 했던 그는 이번에 테레사 크리스티나라는 브라질 여성 싱어의 오프닝을 함께 선보일 예정이다. 그녀는 최근 카에타누 벨로주의 공연에 늘 스페셜 게스트로 섰으며, 브라질 음악 고유의 멋에 충실한 음악가이다. 이미 이름만으로도 감동에 젖게 만드는 전설적인 거장이기에, 그리고 방대한 디스코그래피를 이 자리에서 다 소개할 수는 없기에, 많은 이들이 직접 두 눈과 귀로 아름다운 역사를 담아갔으면 하는 바람이다.

For over 35 years, Grammy Award winning Caetano Veloso has been a major musical, social and cultural force in Brazil, and an influential figure to musicians all over the world. He is perhaps Brazil’s greatest contemporary songwriter and is among the most significant artists to come out of the late 60s ‘Tropicalia’ movement. Jon Pareles of The New York Times calls him “one of the greatest songwriters of the century.” His latest release, <Abraçaço>(2014) is the final installment of a trilogy with the youthful trio he employed on 2007’s <Cê> and 2009’s <zii e zie> known as the ‘Banda Cê’: Pedro Sá on electric guitar, Ricardo Dias Gomes on bass and Rhodes piano, and Marcelo Callado on drums. <Abraçaço>, which was released in 2012 in South America and Europe, won a Latin Grammy for Best Singer-Songwriter Album and earned the #1 spot on Rolling Stone Brazil’s Best National Albums of 2012 list.

Caetano performed a five star concert at Barbican Hall in May 2014 as part of its month-long celebration of the Nonesuch label's 50th anniversary. The concert, featuring songs from <Abraçaço>, was described by The Times as "a perfect evening," The Guardian "exquisite." The Arts Desk says: "Caetano Veloso gets more extraordinary."

Caetano Veloso is among the most influential and beloved artists to emerge from Brazil, where he began his musical career in the 1960s. He has over 50 recordings to his credit, including 14 on Nonesuch. Absorbing musical and aesthetic ideas from sources as diverse as The Beatles, concrete poetry, the French Dadaists, and the Brazilian modernist poets of the 1920s, Veloso—together with Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Tom Zé, his sister Maria Bethânia, and a number of other poets and intellectuals—founded the Tropicália movement and permanently altered the course of his country’s popular music.
