역동적인 에너지와 창의력이 결합된 라틴재즈의 새로운 미래

에카킴 보일스톤 재즈는 재즈드러머 에카킴을 중심으로 일본의 피아니스트 준야 후쿠모토, 베이시스트 케이스케 히가시노, 리투아니아의 색소포니스트 리우타우라스 야누샤이티스가 함게 하는 다국적 라틴재즈밴드이다. 이 팀은 리더인 에카킴이 미국 보스턴 버클리 음대 재학시절 함께 모여 활동을 시작하였으며, 2010년 준야 후쿠모토의 제안으로 일본 투어를 시작하면서 에카킴 보일스톤 재즈로 발전하였다. 현재까지 매년 미국, 유럽, 일본, 한국 등지에서 앨범을 발매하며 공연 하고 있다. 최근에는 일본에서 재즈 스탠다드를 라틴재즈 스타일로 편곡한 앨범을 발매하는 프로젝트를 진행하였다. 리더 에카킴은 현재까지 약 10장의 앨범을 제작, 발매하였으며 미국의 영향력 있는 비평가 브랜트 블랙은 2011년 발매된 앨범 <Ekahsonic>에 대해 ‘라틴재즈의 새로운 미래를 제시하는 가장 주목할만한 작품 중 하나’라고 평했다. 올해 말에는 세계 각국의 동요를 재즈로 편곡한 앨범을 발매하며, 내년에는 유명 클래식 곡들을 여러 라틴재즈 스타일로 편곡한 앨범을 발표할 예정이다. 이번 자라섬 무대에서는 에카킴 보일스톤 재즈의 과거와 현재, 그리고 미래의 음악 모두를 만나볼 수 있는 기회가 될 것이다.

The future of Latin jazz combining dynamic energy and creativity

Jazz drummer Ekah Kim as a center, Ekah Kim Boylston Jazz is an international Latin jazz band with a Japanese pianist Junya Fukumoto, bassist Keisuke Higashino, and Lithuanian saxophonist Liutauras Janusaitis. This team started their performance when the leader Ekah Kim was studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston. After Japan tour suggested by Junya Fukumoto in 2010, the team grew as Ekah Kim Boylston Jazz. They have released albums and performed in USA, Europe, Japan, Korea and more. Recently, they organized a project releasing a album consisting of jazz standards arranged with Latin jazz style in Japan. The leader Ekah Kim has produced and released 10 albums, an influential critic from USA Brent Black commented on 2011 album <Ekahsonic> that ‘one of the remarkable album suggesting new future of Latin jazz.’ End of this year, they plan to release an album with children’s songs arranged as jazz and an album with classical music arranged as Latin jazz style next year. This Jarasum stage will be a great opportunity to meet all of their music from the past, present, and future.
