노르웨이 최고의 프로그레시브/네오 사이키델릭/재즈락 트리오 엘리펀트 9은 스스로 보통의 재즈밴드가 아니라고 설명한다. 락 음악을 재즈 음악만큼 강하게 수용하고 있고, 하이 옥테인 락앤재즈 사이키델리아(High Octane Rock’n’Jazz Psychedelia)라고 장르를 표현할 만큼 그 색채와 방향이 뚜렷하고 짙다. 하지만 ‘사이키델릭’이라는 단어를 써서 이들이 몽환적이고 나른한 음악을 할 것으로 생각하면 큰 오산이다. 노르웨이 최고의 라이브 밴드라는 타이틀은 괜히 얻은 것이 아니다. 말 그대로 락 음악에서 오는 쾌감과 재즈 음악에서 오는 집중력을 모두 가져가는 엘리펀트 9은 찰나의 독주에서뿐만 아니라 멤버 간의 절묘한 합에서 에너지를 뿜어내는가 하면, 즉흥 연주의 순간에서도 큰 힘을 발한다. 잔뜩 긴장을 쌓다가도 그것이 응축되어 폭발하는 지점에 이르면 락과 재즈 모두를 느끼는 놀라운 경험을 하게 될 것이다. 앨범에는 사이키델릭 음악을 대표하는 신서사이저 사운드를 포함해 다양한 소리 구성이 등장하고 여러 디테일이 담겨 있다. 그래서 10분에 가까운 트랙도 집중할 수 있을 만큼 흥미로운 전개 양상을 선보이지만, 라이브에서는 그러한 디테일을 압도하는 힘과 뛰어난 실력이 있다. 2006년 결성되어 2008년 첫 앨범을 발표한 뒤, 재즈 시장과 락 음악 시장 양쪽에서 모두 환호를 받기 시작한 엘리펀트 9은 이후 유럽 전역에서 인기를 얻었고 스웨덴의 유명한 프로그레시브 락 기타리스트이자 아트 디렉터, 사운드 엔지니어인 레이너 피스케(Reine Fiske)와 두 장의 앨범을 함께 발표하기도 했다. 만약 평화로운 자라섬국제재즈페스티벌에 갑자기 압도될 정도의 긴장과 힘이 느껴진다면, 이들이 공연을 하는 시간일지도 모른다. 그렇다고 해서 겁을 먹거나 부담스러워하지는 말자. 그만큼 충분히 멋있고 집중력이 있어서, 몰입하여 감상할수록 더 많은 감동을 얻어갈 것이다.

The members of the group have a strong history in bands like Bigbang, Shining, Motorpsycho and Supersilent, but it’s within the constellation Elephant9 that these three musicians have been given the ultimate playground to showcase their eclectic tastes and musical abilities. Through Torstein Lofthus’ thunderous and hazardous drumming, bass player Nikolai Hængsle Eilertsen’s steady, thumping timekeeping, keyboardist and organ player Ståle Storløkken’s rich and uncompromising layers of sounds, they give you sounds and rhythm structures that have made grown men and women cry and laugh in joy. Elephant9 find inspiration in music that pushes the envelope, which has made music journalists dig deep for fitting descriptions. The circular melodic themes of Tangerine Dream have been mentioned, so has the blazing, phasing world of Jimi Hendrix. And it doesn’t stop there. Other reviewers have namedropped John Coltrane, Deep Purple, Soft Machine and Fela Kuti, all who have in common that they disregarded the rules and have stood the test of time as a result of that. Still, Elephant9 feel no desire in being regarded as retro, as they venture into a new chaotic time for music with open arms. The mix of their collective preferences and unique musical abilities make Elephant9 stir up a unique, uncontrollable and extrovert sound that aims to entertain and mesmerize its audience.
