현재 유럽 재즈는 독일과 북유럽에 집중되어 있지만, 프랑스를 빼놓고는 논할 수 없다. 미국 재즈 뮤지션들이 유럽에 진출할 때 열렬한 지지를 해주었던 곳도 바로 프랑스였다. 미국의 연주자들이 프랑스를 방문할 때면 함께 연주할 현지 연주자들의 역할도 중요했는데, 그 중에서 가장 눈에 띄는 활약을 했던 연주자가 바로 앙리 텍시에다. 어린 시절, 앙리 텍시에는 피아노를 먼저 접했다. 그는 15살의 나이에 이미 재즈클럽에서 피아노를 연주할 정도로 음악에 탁월한 재능을 보였다. 그러나 베이스 자리가 공백이었던 빅밴드에 입단하기 위해 잡은 베이스는 결국 인생의 동반자가 되었다. 그가 전업 베이시스트로 자리를 잡아가던 60년대는 미국 연주자들의 유럽 투어가 활발히 진행되고 있던 시기였다. 프랑스를 방문했던 미국의 재즈 뮤지션들에게 앙리 텍시에는 항상 1순위 베이시스트였고, 그가 버드 파웰(Bud Powell), 덱스터 고든(Dexter Gordon), 쳇 베이커(Chet Baker) 같은 스타 뮤지션들과 함께 연주할 수 있었던 것도 이 때문이었다. 필 우즈(Phil Woods)의 밴드 멤버로도 활동했던 앙리 텍시에는 70년대에 들어서면서 자신의 앨범 발표에 집중하기 시작했다. 타악기, 첼로, 플루트 등의 악기를 추가로 익히며 음악적 이해를 확장한 것도 이때였다. 정상급 베이스 연주자로서 프랑스 재즈계의 중심축으로 자리하며 자신의 음악 세계를 확장해가는 것이 그에겐 최우선 과제였다. 그로 인해 앙리 텍시에의 음악은, 난해한 아방가르드에서부터 프랑스적 감수성이 담긴 발라드까지 다양한 영역을 아우르며, 특별히 어느 재즈 사조에도 치우치지 않는 독보적인 세계를 구축했다. 자라섬국제재즈페스티벌에서 그는 앙리 텍시에 ‘호프’ 퀄텟으로 무대에 오른다. 그의 아들 세바스티앙 텍시에(클라리넷), 프랑수아 크넬룹(바리톤 색소폰), 루이 무탱(드럼)으로 이루어진 밴드다. 온전히 프랑스인들로 이루어진 밴드이지만 미국 재즈에서 접할 수 있는 치열하고 빼곡한 구성의 음악을 들려줄 예정이다.

Henri Texier's path is called the most symbolic and the richest of the European Jazz musicians. Symbol of a generation who has done wonders for the self-confidence and eager for experiment, the double bassist was the inexhaustible catalyst of musical adventures, occupying a determining role - by his capacity to federate the creative energies. Henri Texier, born in January 27th, 1945, discovers jazz while he was a young teenager and very fast gives up piano for double bass. Texier was a self-taught jazz bassist, crediting Wilbur Ware most as an influence. He was introduced into the Parisian clubs by Daniel Humair and he played with great masters such as Bud Powell, Kenny Clarke, Lee Konitz, Dexter Gordon and more. Since then, he keeps working with hundreds of groups and prestigious creators. He toured through Europe and played at Newport Jazz Festival(USA) with Phil Woods and His European Rhythm Machine(Phil Wood, Georges Gruntz and Daniel Humair) which he created. He also visited Africa, Madagascar, India, Middle East, Canada, Japan and USA.

He recorded a hundred of disks, among which more than twenty under his name. He released a cd of the Henri Texier ‘Hope’ Quartet with Sébastien Texier (clarinet, alto sax), François Corne Loup (baryton sax) and Louis Moutin (drums) in march 2013 for Label BLEU intitled <Live at l’Improviste>. His next cd is <Sky Dancers>(2015) with the Sky Dancers Sextet released by label BLEU.
