핀란드 출신의 피아니스트 카리 이코넨은 2013년에 발표한 트리오의 첫 앨범 <Bright>를 통해 단숨에 유럽 지역에 이름을 알리기 시작했다. 스칸디나비아 반도 지역 특유의 정서 외에도 아프리카와 중동 지역의 민속음악 스타일까지 접목한 카리 이코넨 트리오의 음악은 그 독특함을 인정받아, 미국과 유럽의 각종 재즈 매체를 통해 2013년 올해의 앨범 차트에 집중적으로 소개되며 호평을 받았다. 그의 이러한 성공은 1997년부터 솔로 활동과 Karikko, Gnomus 등 다양한 프로젝트로 꾸준히 음악적인 깊이와 경험을 더한 결과였다. 두 번째 앨범 <Beauteous Tales and Offbeat Stories>(2015)도 마찬가지로 각종 재즈 관련 차트를 석권했고, 핀란드의 대표적인 음악 시상식인 Emma Awards 후보에도 올랐다. 다양한 문화권의 음악 스타일을 마치 솜씨 좋은 셰프처럼 재즈 트리오 구성안에서 요리해내는 카리 이코넨은, 올해 자라섬에서도 맛있는 음악으로 관객들과 만날 예정이다.

Finnish Jazz Trio Kari Ikonen Trio, Pianist Kari Ikonen, drummer Markku Ounaskari and bass player Olli Rantala, puts together a bunch of artful original compositions, a few folk songs, a Bollywood movie hit, and some freshly improvised creations. The subtle balance between the compositions and individual freedom, the joyful interaction between the three musicians, the intense rhythmic flow and the enormous energy are the main factors of this impressive unity, where the classic piano trio sound is given a new dimension by Rantala’s exceptional bowing skills.

Kari Ikonen Trio's debut album <Bright>(2013) has gained a lot of international success, making the band busy playing in clubs and festivals all over Europe and in the USA. German JAZZTHETIK and American Something Else! Reviews chose <Bright> on their lists of the best jazz albums of 2013. The follow-up, <Beauteous Tales and Offbeat Stories> was released by the same label in April 2015 and was immediately picked as the jazz album of the week at NDR and one of the hot new releases at The Europe Jazz Media Chart. British Marlbank ranked this trio as one of the five state of the art trios of 2015. By the end of the year the album made its way to 10 lists of the best albums of 2015 in Something Else! Reviews and more. Also, it got nominated for the Jazz-Emma award, Finland’s Grammy for the jazz album of the year.
