핀란드의 아코디언 연주자 키모 포요넨의 음악은 한 문장으로 묘사하기 어려울 만큼 다양하고 독특하다. 아코디언이라는 악기가 가진 고정관념을 단번에 무너뜨리는 그의 아이디어와 연주는, 평론가들로 하여금 키모 포요넨을 단순히 아코디언 연주자(player)가 아닌 아코디언 모험가(adventurer)로 부르게 만들 만큼 독창적이다. 키모 포요넨의 공식 홈페이지에 명시된 그의 프로젝트는 현재 14개나 된다. 그중에는 무용, 연극 등 다양한 예술 장르와 협연하는 프로젝트도 있고, 민속음악, 록, 전자음악 등 폭넓은 장르의 스타일을 아우르고 있다. 무대 위에서 아코디언 외에도 전자악기를 제어하는 미디 장치를 응용하여 다양한 효과를 첨가하는가 하면, 방금 했던 연주를 반복해서 재생해주는 딜레이 장치를 이용하여 연주를 층층이 쌓아가는 방식으로 마치 오케스트라의 연주를 방불케하는 화려한 퍼포먼스도 보여준다. 특히 이번 자라섬 무대에 솔로 프로젝트로 오르는 키모 포요넨은, 사운드 디자이너와 조명 디자이너를 함께 대동하고 올 계획이어서, 그의 음악이 선사할 강렬함은 훨씬 배가될 예정이다.

Finnish accordion adventurist Kimmo Pohjonen is internationally known for revolutionizing accordion music, sound and performance. A visionary of boundless energy and creativity, Pohjonen’s roots include folk, dance, classical, rock, experimental, theatre music and more. Pohjonen has reinvented the accordion with his own custom made instrument that includes effects and MIDI. His performances feature dynamic compositions and visuals with daring new accordion sounds never heard before.

Pohjonen performs worldwide as solo artist and in many ensembles and projects such as Uniko with Kronos Quartet, KTU with Trey Gunn and so on. Pohjonen also works with French jazz drummer Eric Echampard as an improvisational duo. He has performed over one thousand concerts at some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls and festivals including The Proms at Royal Albert Hall in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, Roskilde Festival, WOMAD festivals and many jazz festivals. The documentary film about Pohjonen ‘Soundbreaker’ premiered in 2012, won the Prix de la Création /Award for Creativity at FIFA Montreal. He also has composed several film scores including Chinese / Finnish feature film ‘Jade Warrior’ for which he and colleague Samuli Kosminen won the Finnish Jussi Award for Best Film Score of 2005.
