프랑스 출신의 드럼 연주자 마누 카체는 단순히 재즈에만 국한 지을 수 없을 만큼 다양한 재능과 뛰어난 역량을 지니고 있다. 그가 처음 프로 연주자로 모습을 드러낸 곳도 스팅(Sting), 피터 가브리엘(Peter Gabriel), 제프 벡(Jeff Beck) 등 팝, 록 뮤지션들의 세션 무대와 앨범이었다. 또한 그의 데뷔 앨범 <It’s About Time>(1992)은 세션 연주자로 활동하면서 친분을 쌓은 브랜포드 마살리스(Branford Marsalis), 리차드 갈리아노(Richard Galliano) 등 재즈 뮤지션들이 대거 참여했으나 지금도 록 음반으로 분류되고 있다. 그러나 이후 색소폰 연주자 얀 가바렉(Jan Garbarek)을 만나면서 그의 음악 스타일도 바뀌기 시작했다. 유럽 재즈계에서 매우 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있는 얀 가바렉은 마누 카체를 유럽의 대표적인 재즈 레이블 ECM의 창사 20주년 기념 콘서트에 대동한 것을 시작으로 자신의 앨범에 정기적으로 참여시켰다. 결국 2005년에 발표한 마누 카체의 두 번째 앨범 <Neighbourhood>는 자연스레 특유의 공간감과 서정미가 드러나는 음악을 담게 되었다. 그는 그 뒤로 계속해서 <Playground>(2007), <Third Round>(2010), <Manu Katché>(2012) 등 재즈 앨범을 연달아 발표하였고 곧 세계적인 재즈 드러머로 발돋움하게 된다. 또한 이를 통해 토마쉬 스탄코(Tomasz Stanko), 마티아스 아익(Mathias Eick), 닐스 페터 몰베르(Nils Petter Molvaer) 등 유럽의 재즈 연주자들과도 활발히 교류했다. 2014년에 발표한 라이브 앨범 <Live In Concert>에는 토르 브룬보르그, 짐 왓슨, 루카 아퀴노 등 유럽 재즈 연주자들로 구성된 퀄텟 편성의 공연 실황이 담겨있다. 올해 발표한 앨범 <Unstatic>은 스웨덴의 재즈-훵크 트롬본 연주자 닐스 란드그렌(Nils Landgren)이 객원 멤버로 참여했는데, 영국의 가디언지는 “재즈의 세계로 친절히 이끄는 초대장”이라며, 이전보다 더 대중적인 멜로디와 리듬이 강조된 그의 달라진 모습을 극찬하기도 했다. 마누 카체의 드럼 연주를 두고 평론가들은 항상 능수능란한 연주를 힘 들이지 않고 쉽게 한다는 평을 한다. 자라섬국제재즈페스티벌 재즈 아일랜드 무대에서는 경지에 오른 그의 연주를 직접 확인할 수 있다.

Both as a live and studio musician Manu Katché is one of the greatest drummers of our time. Possessed of a unique playing style, it’s because of his distinct mixture of elegance and power that musicians and producers have sought his services. As Peter Gabriel’s drummer of choice Katché was hugely influential on his biggest hit ‘Sledgehammer’ and, more recently, as the focal point of Gabriel's live band on his ‘Back to front’ world tour. Katché’s long-running collaboration with Sting is also a key aspect of his career, again his distinctive style lending itself to Sting’s biggest hit ‘Englishman in New York’.

It would take a long time to recount the list of pop greats whom Manu Katché has worked with, however his works in jazz are of equal importance, the most well known of these was as a long time member of the Jan Garbarek Group. Katché also hosted the television music show ‘One Shot Not’ on Arte TV channel, and it was here he met and played with countless musicians from across the musical spectrum. Katché’s work as a composer and bandleader is an integral part of his career. He has released six internationally acclaimed albums under his own name. His music distinguished by his sense for precise, melodic, catchy themes, its unique flow and deep sense of atmosphere. It is testament to Manu Katché’s genius that both these sides of his musical personality – the outstanding drummer and sound-magician, and the composer and bandleader - complement each other so perfectly.
