오레곤이라는, 다소 검색하기에는 불편할 수도 있는 이 밴드는 무려 1971년부터 활동을 시작한, 그 기원을 거슬러 올라가면 1960년부터 역사를 시작하는 유서 깊은 밴드다. 밴드 이름이 오레곤이 된 건 당연히 이들이 오레곤과 연관이 있기 때문이다. 밴드의 초기 주축 멤버 중 두 사람은 오레곤 대학교 학생이었을 때 만났고, 처음에는 빌 에반스(Bill Evans)와 스캇 라파로(Scott LaFaro), 그리고 브라질 음악의 영향을 받았다고 한다. 밴드를 결성한 뒤로는 재즈를 기반으로 여러 가지 다른 음악을 가져와 섞어내기 시작했고 그 과정에서 클래식, 포크, 뉴에이지 등 몇 가지 장르의 음악을 적극적으로 수용하는 모습을 보이기도 했다. 특히 그중 몇 앨범에서 찾아볼 수 있는, 실내악의 영향을 받은 악기 편성은 오레곤이 선보인 매력 중 하나다. 무엇보다 이들이 이루어낸 가장 큰 매력은 아메리칸 네이티브의 음악을 비롯해 이른바 월드뮤직이라 불리는, 각 국가 고유의 다양한 음악까지 재즈와 결합했다는 점이다. 월드 퓨전, 에스닉 재즈와 같은 장르명은 오레곤의 음악을 표현하기 위해 만들어진 것인가 하는 생각이 들 정도다. 그렇게 해서 만들어진 매력 중 하나는 재즈라는 문법 아래 즉흥성과 독주를 두면서도 오레곤만이 가지는 독특한 분위기와 호흡을 완성해내는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 이들은 뱅가드(Vanguard), 일렉트라(Elektra), ECM 등 이른바 명문 레이블이라 불리는 여러 레이블을 거치며 많은 앨범을 발표했으며, 각자 솔로 활동의 시간을 가지기도 했다. 약간의 멤버 교체가 있었지만, 긴 시간 동안 그리고 최근까지 꾸준히 음악을 들려주고 있는 만큼 무대 위에서는 안정적이고 아름다운 연주를 수놓는다. 자라섬국제재즈페스티벌의 첫 번째 날, 메인 스테이지에서 이들의 연주는 아마 그날의 날씨, 자라섬의 공기에 어울리며 더욱 집중할 수 있는 분위기를 만들 수 있지 않을까 기대해본다.

At the core of an Oregon concert is a joyful embracing of adventure, a willingness by four virtuoso improvisers to expose their creative processes to an audience. Rooted in jazz, but drawing from musical wellsprings all around the world, the quartet aspires to transcend its sources and create compelling, new music with every performance.

In 1970 Ralph Towner, Glen Moore, and Collin had joined the Paul Winter Consort for a 50-concert U.S. tour where they quickly formed an alliance with its oboist, Paul McCandless. In 1971 the band made its debut in New York City and named itself as ‘Oregon’ alluding to Ralph and Glen’s nostalgic reminiscences of their home state. For three decades Oregon has inspired audiences in renowned concert halls including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and many more. They also have played in lots of international jazz clubs and at major festivals on tour throughout every continent.

In 1996 Mark Walker has become the new fourth member of Oregon and together with Towner, Moore, and McCandless, they traveled to Moscow in June 1999 to record the double CD entitled <Oregon In Moscow>. This project is the band’s debut recording of their orchestral repertoire. In March 2015, it was announced that Glen Moore was departing from the group, with bassist Paolino Della Porta replacing him. Even though there were big changes several times, they are still active and the group enjoys an avid and eclectic following.
