The13th JARASUM INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

2012년 듀크 엘링턴 오케스트라(Duke Ellington Orchestra), 2013년 프리저베이션 홀 재즈밴드(Preservation Hall Jazz Band)등 자라섬국제재즈페스티벌에는 꾸준히 대규모 인원의 빅밴드가 스테이지에 섰다. 올해는 스패니쉬 할렘 오케스트라가 그 자리를 맡게 되었다. 스패니쉬 할렘은 브롱스(Bronx)와 맞닿아 있는 이스트 할렘(East Harlem) 지역을 말하며 구성원 대부분이 중앙아메리카 혹은 남미 출신의 이민자들이거나 후손들이다. 당연히, 스패니쉬 할렘 오케스트라 멤버들은 푸에르토리코를 비롯해 중남미 지역에 뿌리를 두고 있다. 그리고 이들이 하는 음악은, 거칠고 에너지가 넘치는 살사, 라틴 재즈 음악이다. 물론 라틴 재즈 특유의 여유도 가지고 있지만, 열세 명의 대규모 인원으로 구성된 이들은 무엇보다 힘과 열정을 보고 듣는 이들에게 고스란히 전달한다. 그러면서도 특유의 흥과 여유를 잃지 않기에 지금까지 거대한 밴드가 잘 이어져 왔는지도 모른다. 음악적으로도 성과를 이룬 이들은 2005년 ‘최우수 살사 앨범’, 2010년 ‘최우수 트로피컬 라틴 앨범’으로 그래미 시상식에서 상을 타기도 했다. 리더 오스카 에르난데스를 필두로 세 명의 보컬리스트, 세 명의 퍼커션 연주자, 베이스, 색소폰/플루트, 트럼본, 트럼펫으로 구성된 대형 밴드는 (대부분의 좋은 빅 밴드 구성원들이 그러하듯) 각 연주자가 모두 각자의 영역에서 인정받고 또 따로 활동하기도 한다. 특히 트럼본을 맡은 더그 비버스와 레이날도 호르헤(Reynaldo Jorge)를 포함한 멤버 다수는 에디 팔미에리(Eddie Palmieri)와 [La Perfecta II] 등에서 호흡을 맞춘 바 있고, 맘보 레전드 오케스트라(Mambo Legends Orchestra) 등에서 활동하기도 하며 다양한 오케스트라 혹은 음악가의 앨범에 세션으로 참여하고 있다. 탄탄한 연주력과 흥겨운 리듬으로 뜨거운 밤을 만들어 줄, 스패니쉬 할렘 오케스트라를 기대해 보자.
