싱가포르의 중견 재즈 연주자들과 젊은 유망주들이 모여 2013년에 결성한 더 스티브 맥퀸스는 일본의 패리스 매치(Paris Match)를 떠올리게 하는 애시드 재즈 그룹이다. 빈티지한 느낌의 펜더 로즈 건반(Fender Rhodes keyborad)으로 더 스티브 맥퀸스만의 무드를 만들어내는 조슈아 완, 그리고 편안한 음색으로 그루브와 감성 표현에 탁월한 재능을 보여주는 보컬 지니 블룹이 공동으로 리더를 맡고 있다. ‘네오 빈티지 소울-훵크(Neo Vintage Soul-Funk)’라는 말로 자신들의 음악을 표현하는 더 스티브 맥퀸스는, 두 번째로 발표한 정규 앨범 <Seamonster>(2015)의 프로듀서를 맡았던 세계적인 애시드 재즈 그룹 인코그니토(Incognito)의 리더 쟝-폴 ‘블루이’ 모닉(Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick)으로부터 스나키 퍼피(Snarky Puppy)에 비견하는 음악이라고 극찬을 받기도 했다. 세련된 감성과 리듬의 애시드 재즈를 원하는 이들에게 절대 놓칠 수 없는 무대가 될 것이다.

The Steve McQueens refuse to be pedestrian; they don’t live in the transient or the touch-and-go. Swerving between cool seductions and gripping magnetism, they aim to light the world up with their band of self-styled neo-vintage soul-funk. The quintet formed in 2013 as a forging of five mercurial talents – Ginny Bloop(vocals), Joshua Wan(keyboards), Jase Ng(bass), Aaron Lee(drums) and Fabian Lim(saxophones) in Singapore. Since their debut, they have been defining their own style of jazz infused neo-soul, a groove-based hybrid of tightly arranged and freely improvised sounds. The band’s music continues to evolve with the recent addition of a sixth member – jazz guitarist Andrew Lim.

The band have played at the major venues and festivals in Singapore and the region, including Japan’s iconic Summersonic, the Singjazz Festival. Their concerts are at once soulful and sultry, eclectic and eccentric. It was this riveting mix and originality that caught the attention of veteran producer Bluey, leader of seminal acid jazz band Incognito, who invited them to London to record their second album <Seamonster>(2015) with him and to open for Incognito at The O2 in London. Now more international dates are being lined up as they continue to build their reputation and rapport with audiences.
