힙한 재즈 트리오에는 배드배드낫굿(BadBadNotGood)이나 고고펭귄(GoGo Penguin)만 있는 것은 아니다. 독일에서 말 그대로 ‘혁신’이라는 반응을 얻으며 유쾌한 재즈 음악을 하는 쓰리 폴은 앞서 비유한 두 밴드보다 더욱 경쾌하다. 요즘 이런 힙한 재즈 트리오가 그렇듯, 역시 이들도 재즈 하나만으로 자신들을 설명하지 않는다. 하지만 배드배드낫굿의 음악이 재즈라는 세계로 구현하는 힙합이고 고고펭귄의 음악이 재즈와 전자음악이라는 양쪽 세계 사이의 어딘가 즈음이라면, 이들의 음악은 하나의 장르만으로 설명할 수 없다. 힙합, 락, 레게, 훵크, 팝 등 다양한 대중음악을 먹은 뒤 자연스럽게 몸으로 소화해내는 듯한 이들의 모습은 재미뿐만 아니라 감동까지 준다. 그래서 이들의 음악을 혁신이라 하는 것이다. 앨범에 랩을 담고 색소폰으로 스크래치를 표현하는가 하면(!) 레이지 어게인스트 더 머신(Rage Against The Machine)의 ‘Killing In The Name’, 너바나(Nirvana)의 ‘Lithium’, 콜드플레이(Coldplay)의 ‘The Scientist’를 재즈로 표현하는 등 이들에게는 아무런 경계도, 한계도 없는 듯하다. 재미있는 상상력과 그걸 구현해내는 뛰어난 연주로, 보고 듣는 이들을 저절로 웃게 하는 이들의 음악이 결코 가볍고 황당하기만 한 것은 아니다. 정말 제대로 된 감동은 그러한 흥미로운 아이디어의 틀이 되어주는 기발한 테마, 그걸 뒷받침하며 곡 전체를 이끌어가는 탄탄한 연주력이 함께 하기에 가능한 것이다. 여기에 콩고의 피를 지닌, 아프로 소울 싱어 멜라네가 밴드와 함께하게 되니, 멋은 두 배 이상으로 커진다. 멜라네는 콩고와 유럽의 정체성 모두를 가지고 있으며 때론 콩고어로, 때론 영어로 노래하기도 한다. 그녀는 정치적이고 사회 고발적인 이야기부터 사랑과 일상에 관한 이야기까지 다양한 소재로 노래한다. 또한, 쓰리 폴과 비슷하게 다양한 공연 경험을 통해 여러 장르를 익혔다고 한다.

The Trio Three Fall belongs to the most innovative sprouts of the young, German Jazz scene. The furor which they caused in all big jazz festivals can be ascribed to the unusual Trio ensemble consisting of 2 wind instruments, and a drummer, excluding the standard bass and chord instruments. Three Fall takes the liberty to capture from Jazz and do only that which gives them pleasure, with the result, that their Hip-Hop, Funk and Reggae roots are unmistakably audible. Trombone shorty engaged this band in his preliminary program during his German tour as he found them to be unique. Chad Smith, the drummer from Red Hot Chili Peppers himself, ennobled their Peppers interpretations by declaring “best Red Hot Chili Peppers covers I’ve heard done yet….”

During the last few years, this unique music which is recorded and published by the renowned jazz label ACT has been celebrated during concert tours through Europe, China, Russia, Egypt and Spain. The fact that the Trio won the Future Sounds competition staged by the Leverkusen Jazz Festival is an acknowledgement of how electrifying their music is. Currently, Three Fall is building bridges by incorporating, the outstanding newcomer German-Congolese Afro-Soul singer Melane Nkounkolo in their program.
